    No such thing as "lean muscles". It's a BS fitness word-byte just like "toning".
    Muscles do not contain fat. You are gaining muscles while staying lean.

    Thats awesome! That is my plan to. I started running a few years ago and just got skinny with no muscle tone at all. Then a couple of years ago I started lifting and finally for the first time saw a little bit of muscle. Now I'm hooked and anxious to see what I really can do.

    Thats awesome! That is my plan to. I started running a few years ago and just got skinny with no muscle tone at all. Then a couple of years ago I started lifting and finally for the first time saw a little bit of muscle. Now I'm hooked and anxious to see what I really can do.

    Same here.....haven't cut back my miles but steadily building some muscle mass....

    Actually all muscle is lean muscle. OP it's okay, we knew what you meant. For gaining lean mass I would suggest doing a bulk and cut. What is your current routine?

    Supplement companies routinely advertise "Build Lean Muscle" and place that misleading phrase on the product packaging. They really mean "Build Lean Mass." But to the average consumer, that doesn't make much sense. (Also standard copy for body building magazines.)

    Next time you're at GNC or clicking around, look for that phrase. You'll be surprised how often it is used.

    Lean means absent of fat so yes, technically all muscle is lean.

    It's common knowledge that lean muscle is a concept related to lean body mass - no it's not the scientific term, but we all knew what OP meant. Instead of offering some friendly advice people were more happy to correct her use of the (popular - much used) term.

    It is not lean or fatty

    Whenever I read threads about this I can help but think about cuts of meat. I mean meat is muscle, and different muscles have more or less fat within them (the difference between filet mignon and ribeye, for example...or white and dark meat)

    I've wondered how that plays out in the human body...I remember having morbid conversations about things like this in gross anatomy lab, but it's been a while so forget the substance of conversation.

    Total tangent but I find it an amusing line of thought :smile:
