Calories burned increase if walking in snow?

Sorry for multiple threads, I'm just so full of questions tonight lol.
Anyway, I was curious, does waking in deep snow (greater than a foot) increase the calories burned? I typically only eat 25% of my exercise calories back, but wondering if I could eat back some more because of the work put into walking in deep snow.

I think it is since it take for effort to lift foot out of the soft snow. Not sure of that is just my imagination or it actually takes more effort.0 -
It is a significantly harder workout, but the difficulty depends upon the depth and texture of the snow involved. I don't think there's a clear obvious way to log this without a heart rate monitor.Walking in packed snow increases by 60 percent the calories burned compared to walking on a paved road, while walking in soft snow triples the calories burned compared to walking at the same speed on a treadmill. I vary how I log it, but I never eat back the full estimated calories (well, almost never). I figure walking in heavy, freshly fallen snow is akin to snowshoeing (having done both), but walking on a well-packed trail is really a minimal extra burn. I've seen estimates anywhere from 20% - 300% calories burned, and my experience as an avid winter walker/hiker is the variation is REAL! I do my best job to estimate my exertion level because I don't use a heart rate monitor.0 -
I know when I walk in snow it is harder. How much harder? It all sort of depends. 20% more or less? It's like walking on the sand at the beach. Or walking uphill.0

The other day, I put on my ice skates and then shoveled off the skating rink. A very, very large skating rink. I had absolutely no clue how to log that one.

Thank you everyone for answering. So you guys and gals think increasing from 25 % eating back exercise cals burned to 45-50% would be a good idea?0

The other day, I put on my ice skates and then shoveled off the skating rink. A very, very large skating rink. I had absolutely no clue how to log that one.
That is tough. I would say just ad the shoveling... into sure if it is in the MFP database! If not, then log vigorous skating?0 -
That's why I just go with TDEE lol. I'm going to go out to shovel heavy snow for probably a good 40 minutes in a bit and I wouldn't have a clue how to log it either.

I tried to log snow shoveling. Couldn't find it.
I just called it aerobic activity and didn't log it for as many minutes as I actually shoveled.0 -
I don't know. I walked a mile and a half in it and just ate 3000 calories because snow day.0

Just a few inches of snow is harder to walk in than no snow. I've been walking 2.4 miles at lunch but with just a little snow it took me the same amount of time to walk not as far. I have no idea how to log this though.0 -
