Are there usda databse entries for most variations of winter squash?

I am wondering, as i have looked and have not found any, but occasionally i have great difficulty finding things on there. There are mfp database entires for certain variations, but they seem to vary by 50 calories or more (with the same serving size). I like my diary to be accurate, so i am wondering where these mfp entries come from if they are not from the usda. Thank you, any help is greatly appreciated!

MFP entries can be added by any user. That's why you will sometimes see errors or variations among the entries.

I use these MFP-staff-entered items which track the USDA National Nutrient Database.

FYI, kabocha squash is closely related to Hubbard, so I just use that one.

this alone could be considered a "free food."
  • I understand that they vary because of the factors mentioned above, i am asking for advice for accuratley logging. I understand that squash is healthy, but if i eat 50 calories ocer maintenence every day i will gain 5 pounds in a year. This is why i try to log accuratley. Sometimes, I eat squash every day for months. This is why i am asking.

I've generally found them and logged lots of different varieties, but search the USDA if you can't find one and add it.

What are you looking for specifically? There's an "all varieties" fallback that I've used when I wasn't sure what kind of winter squash I had. I also don't bother differentiating between types of apples -- close enough.

My previous post in this thread showed a screen capture of the MFP Food Database search results for butternut, spaghetti, acorn, Hubbard, and an all varieties average entry - all of those entries can be found in the USDA database also. You can also find pumpkin in the database.

I am not sure what else you are looking for.

I've found every variety I've ever looked for, but I've never just searched for generic winter squash. What varieties are you missing?

Like CyberTone said, one of the first five entries for "squash winter raw" in the MFP database should give you the entry you should use.
  • Interesting. The type i am looking for is a less common one, but i couldnt find any types. I must be dping something incorrectly. Is there a specific format you must use for the database? Would 'winter squash' or 'squash, winter' work? I have tried both to no avail. Could it be something with my browser? I really appreciate all of the help.

What is the name of the type of squash you are looking for?

If what you are looking for is not there I wouldn't worry about it too much. You can monitor your weight and if it is creepy up because of the wrong squash entry you can always cut back on this addiction for a short time
  • Im sorry for wasting everyone's time. My computer wasnt working properly, i have found it now.
