Android smart phone recommendations?

It's time to get a new cell phone. My current cell doesn't hold a charge and I've had to remove apps to just to keep it limping along. I definitely want to have Android O/S (current phone is Gingerbread (v. 2.3)) and would prefer to keep the phone on the smaller side (these new phones seem YUGE).
I'm looking at DROID Mini, but you can't replace the battery, which makes it not the right choice for me.
What do you have that you recommend?
*Am not tied to any specific carrier.

why don't you just fix your current phone? would be cheaper than dropping a ton on a new one..0

You mentioned a preference for Droids, but I would recommend for future reference that you look at IPHONES. I mine!0

I'd love to, but it doesn't seem possible. It no longer accepts updates. I think because it's from 2011? I got a new battery off eBay last year for $3.25 which got me through 2015. The phone actually gets hot to the touch if I'm on it too long.0 -

It's definitely preference. I have a Galaxy S6 as my personal phone and a iPhone 6 as my work phone. Same phone I just personally like the Android platform. The iPhone is nice but you can't replace the battery yourself and your storage space is whatever capacity your phone holds, no SD card to expand the memory.0

@junelove89 Ha, yeah, I don't see me doing it, 'specially if it voids a warranty or anything.0
