Running shoes for Bunions

My mom bought me some Nike frees 5.0 for Christmas, but I have really bad bunions. I've heard conflicting advise- that minimalist shoes are good for bunions but also that extra support is good. I just want to know if these will mess up my feet even more.

Have you seen a podiatrist? They can usually help you select shoes/inserts that will help you.

No I'm pretty broke right now. I wear the Nike flex run 3 right now, and they work pretty good. I just wanted to hear if anyone had experience with differ types of shoes for bunions. Minimalist vs support0

I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm in the Army and have a pretty bad bunion on my right foot. I usually wear Asics to run in but I just put on my vibrams today for the first time in a year and plan to hike up some castle ruins. I'll let you know which pair feel better after a good days exercise.0

@kt893398 - Go see a doctor for the bunion. They can (and will) do surgery to fix the issue. When I was in the army, I ended up on a profile once too often (I used to sprain my ankles fairly regularly thanks to bunion/foot issues) and finally was sent to see a podiatrist. They scheduled surgery, fixed the bunions, and now, YEARS later, I no longer have those issues. And having the surgery while I was in the military was nice, since I didn't have to worry about the medical bills.
*Side note: I use Asics for running and Saucony's for everything else. Always have - even before the surgery to remove bunions. Asics are freaking awesome.0 -

You most likely need a shoe with a "wide toe box." If you have a shoe store that specializes in athletic shoes, they can usually help fit you. I had a Tailor's bunion removed; surgery sucked, but it helped overall. I've found most Nike shoes to be wide enough to accommodate my feet; I usually buy the Tailwind. I can't imagine using a minimalist shoe for running. My podiatrist wanted me to get the most cushion for running; and flat shoes for lifting are fine with her, b/c I have custom orthotics.0

My mom had surgery in both feet for bonions and swears by her Asics. Like another poster said, the kind she wears have a wider toe box and extra cushion to help out.0

Try the Altra running shoes...a little ugly but they have a wide toe box.0
