I like a good stability running shoe for all purpose walking and cross training. But feet are different. Maybe ask at your gym.

Are "trainers" the same as sneakers? If so, you are probably in a different county than I am so my specific brand recommendations will probably be pretty useless.

Lol yes, same as sneakers, I'm only asking a general question though, type of trainers ( sneakers ) if I'm not out running like I used to be, will I still buy running shoes for the gym?

The raised heel of most running shoes makes them less than ideal for anything but running. For walking, weights, and almost anything else, i'd go with a "zero heel" shoe like skateboard shoes (or whatever they're called there):

Don't skimp on what you pay for shoes. Good footwear can save you a lot of pain. Most decent shoe stores will be able to help you.

And you may want to get a couple of good pairs: one specifically for walking and another for cross training. Here they have a category for athletic shoes called "cross trainers". I'd get one pair of each and alternate, if possible.
