First week with MFP

My week with MFP began on Monday. Each day I ended without reaching my calorie budget. Wednesday and Thursday I had deficits of over 700 calories. From Monday morning to Friday morning I had lost 2.4 lb. Today I had dinner out with my wife and had the Olive Garden salmon dinner with breadsticks and salads, and again have a calorie deficit of about 500 calories. I'm filled and have no interest in additional eating. As the weekend approaches I wonder what effect this restaurant meal will have on my weight. Thursday evening a calorie deficit of ~700 showed a weight loss of 0.8 lb Friday morning. I also wonder if I will be able to stay within my calorie budget for the two days. Home is my weakness, because this is where the worst of the junky snacks are. Anyway, I created this discussion just so I could share my thoughts.

Congrats on finishing your first week. I think that you may find the dinner out may have more salt than you have been eating. Other than that, if you were in your calorie deficit, I can't imagine it would have a big impact. Welcome!0

I've not been trying to limit salt, and it shows. The features of this site which I do appreciate include the nutrition counters in the calorie counter. Now that I see clearly the sodium excess I can introduce efforts to have no-salt components to my diet.0

This is my first week too. I can't believe how easy it is to just not pick up that food and eat it. I didn't realize how much I was over eating because it was there. I'm feeling healthier each day and can't believe how much easier things have become over the past week from walking up stairs to workout videos.0

Congrats on your first week! Sounds like you are doing well so far. The weekends are the hardest for me, as we tend to eat out a lot on those days. Even at home we eat heavier foods. The best thing I've found to do is to work on portion control. I weigh or measure out my portion and stick to it. It's a lot easier than it sounds! Good luck this weekend, you can do it!0

I very much agree on the ease with which this helps me avoid eating too much 'because it's there'. Monday night I was downing my usual fatty snacks just because I was trying to reach my calorie budget. Tuesday, I admitted to my daughter that the fatty snacks I'd been having for a long time just didn't taste good Monday, and I haven't even wanted it since then. My exercise is starting out as 1 mile on a treadmill, and even that showed me that my legs were out of shape for vigorous walking. By Friday, though, my legs have adjusted to the vigorous mile and the pain is gone. I work on a 6th floor, so I did some research to learn how many calories are burned in stair climbing. I was disappointed to learn that it is only 2x the calories you'd burn in the same time walking on level ground. It's great for the cardio/pulmonary system, but not so much for aerobic exercise.

I'm about 2 weeks in myself. I have to agree that since I've started logging my food, I don't even have a desire to overeat. I'm also paying attention to my nutrients. I downloaded an app that helps me remember to drink enough water too and that has made a huge difference. Any newbies feel free to add me and we can help each other out!0
