When did you stop feeling like you were big?

I'm really frustrated with myself. I have lost over 100lbs in a little under 2 years and finally hit my weight loss goal that I set in the beginning. However, now that I have reached it I've decided to lose more... Logically I know I look very different than when I was big, but mentally I still feel like the "fat girl" I get really insecure when someone is looking at me- my first instinct is to think they are staring because I'm huge. I just feel really self conscious 90 percent of the time and I'm driving myself crazy lol at what point in your weight loss journey did it finally "click" that you weren't big anymore? Or if anyone has any tips that would help me not feel this way?

First of all, congratulations on your loss! That is amazing. You look fabulous! Remember, it takes quite a while longer for the brain to catch up to the body. It also depends on how long you were overweight to begin with.

Give yourself some time, keep doing what you're doing because it's obviously working and then actively work on changing your thought process. You know you feel insecure when people look at you because you think it's because you're still overweight. Stop yourself, remind yourself of your great accomplishment and learn to take compliments graciously. Just keep at it. It will get better. Enjoy your success. Try not to turn it into a negative.

Firstly, seriously well done! That is so impressive. You should be feeling so proud of yourself. I think sometimes, even when you have made so much progress, you don't see how you have changed, you see and feel what you are used to feeling... which is how you felt at the size you used to be. I am part-way through my fitness/weight loss... and it is strange. On the one hand, it is so nice to feel smaller but it does take some getting used to. I recently went to buy a nice jumper/sweater and I had to convince myself into buying the right size (several smaller than what I would've picked up a year or two ago.) I asked my friend later 'does this definitely fit?'. She said yes. I couldn't quite believe it. I also struggle to recognise myself now with how I was in mirrors/photos. I guess you just have to see yourself as you are now, a much healthier person who has achieved a lot! Maybe treat yourself to a nice new outfit or do something you couldn't/wouldn't have wanted to do before. I think you will feel better in time, as you get used to the healthy person you have become. I hope I can achieve my goals like you have, you're an inspiration! :-)

Congratulations on your amazing loss. You look fantastic, and your smile in your profile picture is great. I suggest you start by changing your name here. You left that moniker behind many, many pounds ago.

It might just be the way my brain is wired but my change really sunk in through doing things. I still remembered when it really clicked I was doing a mud run that had an "over, under, through" section. I went over the wall, under the wall, and then through the wall and I stopped and looked back and thought "there is no way I should have fit through that wall" and I've been ok with my new size since then

    Congrats on your loss!

The "still mentally fat" mindset is real. It's one of the things addressed with me before I had bariatric surgery and after losing 150 so far, I'm still struggling with it. I think people are staring because of my weight and I constantly choose clothes that are too large when I'm shopping. I see data (scale, measuring tape) and smaller parts and pieces, but I can't put it all into a cohesive picture that says "that's me" to my brain. It'll take a while, according to my psychiatrist.

I still feel fat. I don't think it will ever go away. Even when I'm putting on some size S tight dresses, and they fit, I find some fat spots on my body.

Wow! Way to go with the weight loss!! You look fantastic!!

I'm not even out of the overweight side of the chart, and I don't feel big at all. I have the opposite problem though. When I was fat (class II obese, in fact) I didn't feel as big as I looked. I've been going through old photos and I see myself all dressed up and obviously pleased with the way I looked, and I think man, how did I not realize how big I was. I had always thought that I "carried my weight well" but in retrospect there was no where on my 5'2" frame for that weight to hide.

So yes, our minds can play tricks on us both ways.

I really hope you get to a point where you can see how beautiful and healthy you are!

I wouldn't go so far as to put on something tight but it freaks me out that I can buy size S (or even XS) clothing and they fit. (Of course, these are also Walmart sizes which I think are bigger than they say). :)

Even when people say I'm tiny (5'2" and 110ish lbs right now), I still feel the need to point out my stomach and thighs.

But yes, for the love of God, OP...change your user name on here. (Unless it has to do with Taco Bell and then...yum.) :)
  • tbh I'm wondering the same thing
    .-.
    I used to be 160, and now I'm 120.
I'm afraid by the time I reach 100, I still won't be satisfied and still see the bigger me. >.>

This. I never feel comfortable going swimming because I still feel like people are looking at the fat girl... I'm not sure when I'll feel comfortable at a weight / in my own skin. I know I used to be. .. before the gain do hoping it comes back!

Spend more time in front of the mirror getting used to seeing yourself from the outside. Take pictures of yourself and look at them often.

I feel fat, and I still am pretty fat, but today I got a brand new spanking pair of pants in a size M and they were too big! As in, I could have gotten a size S because they were so big. Coming from a background of barely fitting in L sizes bottoms-wise, I have a very hard time believing anything smaller could be too big for me... It's gonna take a while to wrap my head around this one.

I struggled with this before. I hit my goal weight and still felt fat. I was scrutinizing EVERY little detail and honestly, there was no weight that would have satisfied me. Be careful! You may keep dieting and dieting and never be happy and it could jeopardize all your success. It's not unusual at all to reassess your goals, but it sounds to me like you might be fighting with accepting and being happy with the new you.

Well it's tight at the bust, which is not my problem area, and wider at the hips, so it's perfect for me, lol.

Congratulations on your loss! Its hard to change your mind when you are used to feeling like the big one. I am really tall so I've always felt "big" even thin.

I'd try writing down the things you like about yourself. They can be mental, not physical. Just start finding validation in yourself outside of your weight. Are you a good friend? A great writer? A healthy cook? Clearly you've made progress with your health, but maybe you need to make progress on the whole you.

It's going to likely take more than a couple of years to get over that feeling. I started losing weight in 1995. While I don't feel "fat" anymore or insecure when people are looking at me; I'm still paranoid that I have toilet paper on my shoe (or something like that). Maybe that's normal though?

Eventually, you see the "new" you in the mirror so many times...you forget the "old" you. It also helps to burn all fat pics.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and responses :) I'll have to try some of these ideas, and yes, I'll change my name on here as soon as I think of something better lol. it's also really nice knowing it's not just me who struggles with this.
