Got on the scale this morning. It said 350.0-my highest adult weight ever. I weigh more now than I did 9 months pregnant with either of my kids. I really don't know how much I truly weigh because the scale only goes to 350. I am 30 years old, 5 ft 5 in. I have always been overweight, even as a child. My question is should I go with the automatic preset calorie intake that mfp has given me? It seems like a lot. I selected lightly active because I am a nurse so i walk quite a bit at work, although there are periods of sitting when i am charting. I have lost weight before, but normally I get to 50 lbs down and fall off the wagon. Going to the gym is out of the question at this point due to work schedules and sharing one car with my husband. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

What did it give you for a calorie goal?

Generally speaking, though, if you input your stats/data correctly MFP does a pretty good job calculating. Try it out for a few weeks, and if it's not working, tweak as necessary.

Did you select the correct activity level (sedentary, a lot of walking, very active etc)? If you're just starting can you take a trip to your Dr and get weighed in there and talk about a diet plan that would be best for you?

That's probably a good starting point, based on your current weight and occupation.

If 2,230 calories/day seems like a lot to you, you could not consciously diet for the next week, but log all your food and note the calorie count. (Just the act of logging might prompt you to eat less, however.) In order for you to lose 2 pounds per week by eating 2,230 calories per day, MFP thinks you maintain your current weight at 3,230 calories per day.

2,230 at Lightly Active does sound right to me, though. At 350+ pounds, you burn more via normal daily activity than would someone of a lighter weight.

I got a simple pedometer from the VA and found it motivating, and got a FitBit One for Christmas, which is even better. I have a desk job, and I work from home in a small apartment. I envy people like you who can get in a lot of walking naturally during the course of your work day. I recommend you get an activity tracker so you can see how much you are walking now and motivate yourself to walk even more. My One tracks stairs climbed as well, which is fun. You could use a bathroom on another floor in order to get in more stairs.

Looks like it's time for a scale that reads higher than 350.

Get started with those number of calories and see how it goes, it seems right to me with your staying weight and activity level numbers. I would not worry about exersice the first weeks you will figure out when to add that's you go. Keep logging and check in here for support on crazy days, you can do it.

I agree, see your doctor so you have a starting weight. If you are far above 350 consider investing in a scale that reads above 350, as knowing how much you are losing is important data and good for sustaining motivation. Doctor can also do basic labs so you have a starting place.

At your weight, you can eat a lot and still lose! Trust the process. Get a food scale and weigh everything though, so you'll know you are on target.

It sounds like a good starting point. Just be sure you get a food scale and learn how to weigh all your foods and measure your liquids. I wouldn't worry about getting an activity tracker right now lile mentioned above. I'd first start with getting your calories right. It can be tricky at first for some. As long as you weigh everything and log it here accurately ,you will be fine. Being accurate helps you to be sure that you are really eating at a deficit . after you figure your calories out and see what will work best for you, then you can worry about a fitbit or pedometer if you want ( I don't Use one and lost all my weight just fine )

Good advice here. Enjoy the 2230 while you can. As you lose weight, your daily cals goal will drop too. Make small changes, slow and steady. That's how to get past the -50 Mark and make it sustainable.
  • I was over 300 lbs when I joined MFP and lost weight eating 2400 calories per day. Why starve yourself if you don't have to? I just adjusted my goal down as I lost. Now I'm quite active, low 170s and I can maintain at around 2400.

Sounds right to me. I'm 5'8" and started at 331. Also lightly active due to my job. MFP gave me 2109 to start with. Some days I ate them all. Most days I stayed a few hundred under. I've lost 18lbs in 4 weeks. I log EVERYTHING!

Wishing you the best of luck. If you stick with it, it will work. Feel free to send me a request if you'd like.
