Pain in the *kitten*? ... literally!

Okay, so I'm wondering if anyone who has lost a lot of weight has experienced pain in the tailbone after sitting? Like, it hurts A LOT to get up after I've been sitting a while (though what I'm sitting on and my posture both affect the level of pain). It's definitely uncomfortable and can take me up to a good 5-10 seconds to actually stand up.

I asked my doctor about it and she said it's because I don't have that "cushion" of fat that I used to and my body is still adjusting to its new self, and that it will go away over time. That makes sense to me, but sometimes I feel like I'm 80 years old because of how slowly I have to get up from sitting!!

Just curious to see if there are other people with the same problem out there

First of all....Wow! Amazing! Congratulationss!!! Ok, a few years ago I lost 75 pounds. And yes for months my tailbone hurt, if I lay on my side my hips hurt. Just don't make the pain go away the way I did!! I'm now re-losing that same 75 pounds!!!

Yep - I experienced the same thing after losing a lot of my "cushion" It will go away after a while - enjoy it!

I absolutely am having the same problem at the moment, nothing seems to help. I am a truck driver which makes it all the more painful!! sat on my backside all day!!

An inflatable ring or a coccyx cushion might be the only answer!!! well done on the weight loss by the way.

Yeah...it's so weird isn't it?!?! Whenever I do yoga or pilates and have to do some sort of sit up, it hurts my poor little tailbone...it almost feels like it's sticking out or like I'm sitting on something :/
  • I have no idea since I still have most of my cushion, but I just wanted to say wow! You look amazing, you've done such a great job. I hope you are really proud of yourself.

Yep, a real pain in the @rse! I broke my tailbone in several places many years ago, so sitting can really aggravate it, but with proper posture it's usually not too bad. However, after dropping forty pounds, I have found myself becoming sore from sitting for prolong periods, no matter how I sit. So, yes, there is definitely a difference in the amount of cushion. I also suspect that we are sitting differently, even though we don't know it, as a result of having the reduced size and shape of our gluteus maximus.

I was glad to see your post as I have been dealing with the same thing although I've only lost 23 pounds so far. Takes me a while to get mobile too, and my hips hurt more when I'm trying to sleep. My doc is sending me for x rays on my tail bone, but I guess I've found the answer to the pain!

I hurt my tailbone as a kid, and it's always been a pain in the *kitten*... literally!

I really just wanted to pipe in and say that your weighloss is absolutely AMAZING! :o I was just looking at your pics and showing my teen and tween, and we're all applauding your efforts and success. :)
  • since your pain is probably muscular skeletal you might consider asking your doctor if she could give you a medicine called a medrol dose pack. this is a titrated dose of steroids often used when people are experiencing some type of pain/inflammation problem. it is worth asking her... it will probably help you

What fat you have should readjust, but as others suggested, you can target your hinder zone by adding exercises that will build muscle there. If nothing else you could use a hemorrhoid pillow. :ohwell:

Congratulations on your weight loss. Amazing! :flowerforyou:

I can no longer lay on my side when I sleep. If I do my hips hurt so badly in the morning. And my back gets all out of whack. I purchased a new matress about 2 years ago I spent decent money for it. Well since I have lost all this weight, it is no longer comfrtable I can feel every spring and stitch in that darn thing. Long car trips my tail bone goes numb, so I am constantly shifting aound. I have been on my boss at work that I need a new desk chair because mine, has my old *kitten* imprints in the seat.....LOL

I'm starting to have similar issues. I thought it was from exercise. Now I know different! BTW, you look fabulous! Congratulations!!

Yes, I have that. I figure with time I will build up the muscles there (did someone say it already lunges and squats) and it will get better. For now I think I need to start carrying around a cushion.

I slipped on ice and fell down my back porch steps twice in two weeks during the winter, and had a lot of butt-pain. Sitting up really straight and leaning forward so most of the weight was on the back of my thighs helped.
  • Yep, I experienced the same nagging tailbone pain after losing significant weight. For me the discomfort lasted about a year and then just resolved on its own. Like your doc says, it is because you have lost all of the cushioning that you once had in that area. One thing that I did find that helped was just getting up and moving around frequently when you have to sit for long periods of time.

After 5 years I still have to sleep with a pillow between my now knobby knees, but it is soooooo worth it!
  • Yep same thing for the last couple of months. The worst is when soaking in the tub! At first I thought up all sorts of horrible things but the doctor told me the same thing. Aww nothing like all those adjustments!
