I have been eating about 1100-1200 calories for the past month, and have decided to up them since 1) I just started an exercise regime and am no longer losing weight and 2) I have realized that it's healthier.

I burned a total of about 270 calories today on the elliptical, went for 40 minutes at an average pace of about 4.65. To account for any error, I will say I burned about 170-200. I also did strength training for about a half hour, and I am not sure how many calories that burned. Well, I made it to 1457 calories today, which would mean I am at a net of a little over 1200. 179g carbs, 44g fat (usually don't eat this much fat) and 93g of protein. Granted, I had a piece of cake with icing for my nephew's birthday. IT was good and I have not had that in a while.

Do you think I will be okay and start losing weight again? I am kind of freaking out right now because I haven't been at this high a number in calories in a long time. When I use to eat this many calories I don't think I lost weight. I am just freaking out and want to do the right thing!! My weight has stalled for about two weeks at 147.6.

Any feedback would be appreciated!!

One piece of cake will not kill your weight loss. You need that cake once in a while so it's ok! It sounds like you are doing things much healthier this time around, so keep doing your routine and you'll lose weight :)

Thank you everyone!! I hope I am doing this right. I have read a lot of people's weight loss gets going after they up their calories so their net isn't 1200 or lower. But then, there are those who don't lose weight from eating their exercise calories... it's a never ending debate, it seems.

Should I eat more than 1450 calories on exercise days, when I burn 250 on the elliptical and weight train for about 30 minutes?

National Academy of Sports Medicine Answered:
Our bodies require a certain amount of energy (think of it like fuel for a car). We run on this fuel, and we need to replenish it when it is low. Our hunger is like the gas light on a car, telling you it is time to refuel. However, if you put too much fuel in a car, it will simply spill out of the gas tank. Not so with us. When we eat too much – meaning more than our body needs - we are able to store it. Our bodies have an unlimited potential to store fat. So we can overeat, continuously for a long time, and keep storing more fat. Scientists call this an energy imbalance. Which means we have eaten more than we need. In order to lose this fat, once accumulated, we must eat less than we need. We still need nutrients, because they body can’t survive on stored fat alone. We need to provide slightly less energy than our body needs, so it uses our stored body fat to make up the difference. Over time this “reserve tank” will get smaller and smaller as we achieve a healthier weight. We measure this fuel in calories – whether we are measuring the input side (the foods we eat) or the output side – the energy our body pays out to meet its daily needs. To successfully lose weight, you must pay out more than you put in, or put in less than you put out.

I understand your concern. I would feel the same way. I would have to take it on faith and the experience of others before I could easily up my calories and still hope to lose weight. From what I read from people in the know we should up our calories when we exercise, and stay out of starvation mode. I think a person might gain weight at first as they converted fat into muscle, but I bet the inches would show up if you measured yourself. I bet you would start losing pounds after a while.

I am sure some knowledgeable people will post. Interesting topic.

Another question... how many calories do you think is a good range for me? I started, as I said before, at 1100-1200. WIth my deficit from exercise today I am at around 1200 calories but I read that I should be eating 1300-1500. I am 147.6 and 5'4", on my 6th day of an exercise regime. I go every other day. I am also not sure how many calories I should be eating on days I don't work out.
  • I lost a little bit at 1200 but it wasn't consistent and then I stalled. When I bumped mine up to 1300, I started losing. I also eat my exercise calories so I try to net 1300 but not below 1200. You can add them gradually and give it at least two weeks before making another change. You need to give it a chance for your body to adjust before deciding it isn't working.
