Can I really eat bagels & sushi & still lose?

I am one of those people who really cant stand Pale/Atkins or any low carb diet. Especially bc I love doing cardio as a stress reliever- I find my body never really seems able to adapt to low carb.

My question is: as long as my calories are at my personal loss rate of 1700/day and my macros are in line, can I really still enjoy carbs?

An example of a day for me would include
1/2 deli bagel, a tbsp of cream cheese, an egg and a cup of OJ

2 sushi rolls w white rice and a kale salad w vingerette and cup of miso
(Yes plain raw, no tempuras or mayo)

3. A ceasar salad with some animal
Protein no croutons but a small roll

Misc
4. One Sees chocolate truffle (50cals)
Decaf coffee w half and half

On a day like this I will do an hour of cardio, circuits etc.

Lets say my calories are at goal, is this an acceptable way to eat to lose. Ive heard so much negativity about bread and rice etc

Yes. no reason to restrict carbs unless you have a medical reason to do so...

I sure hope so - because I've eaten tons of sushi, bagels, bread, chocolate, lots of rice and other carbs (along with a lot of meat and vegetables), and I'd hate to think that all the pounds I've lost really didn't happen.

I'd skip the roll and go for an extra truffle  But yeah, for most people it's just a matter of calories. Go for it, see how it works, most of the other stuff is just personal preference/what makes them feel better/what fad is today.

Yes you can! However those are foods I have to eat in moderation because they don't tend to fill me up for the calories... so there's no way I could have a bagel, sushi, and a roll, the same day, and I'd drop the cup of OJ and eat a clementine or an orange instead though.

..I eat between 250-350g on average carbs daily and have done through weight loss (53lbs) and maintenance (11 months)
  • I lost 30lbs eating all sorts of carbs.. I was just working out a lot, logging vigorously and staying hydrated. When I went organic soy-free whole-foods vegan for six months, I stopped losing and completely plateaued. Every body is different, but I personally lost the most weight not from cutting things out but from making sure I wasn't overeating and from staying active.
Just made a new account to get rid of the last 10lbs!

As long as you stick to your calories given, you can eat what you love to eat. :)

I got about 60% of my calories from carbohydrates when I was losing weight, including grains. It can be done.

As long as you stay within the allowed calories for the day, you should still be able to lose!

It's calories in/calories out. You could eat 1700 calories of Twinkies a day and still lose. Of course, you'd be hungry all the time, but that's a conversation for another post.

Looks fine to me. It's called a balanced diet for a reason. Cutting out whole food groups seems mad to me!

I'd keep the Sees chocolate but lose the roll. I'd also sub an orange for the juice. Could you eat a whole grain bagel half? I actually lose weight better by keeping carbs under 150 per day.

Sounds good to me. There is nothing wrong with some bread or rice. My only suggestion would be get some orange or red into each day like carrots, butternut squash, red bell pepper or tomato .

Yes. It's called flexible dieting. What matters for weight loss is a calorie deficit. Focusing on a balanced, nutrient dense diet is important too, but arbitrarily restricting one macro or a particular type of food with no medical reason to do so is unnecessary for weight loss.

Also if you are doing an hour of cardio you should probably be eating back at least some of those calories if 1700 is your MFP goal based on the stats you entered when you set up your profile.

Of course! Bagel might slow you down at bit (they tend to have a very high GI) but sushi is amazing for weight loss/gain whatever. I know plenty of bodybuilders who eat a bunch of it on a bulk and less on a cut. Again it really just comes down to CICO, and a bagel in the morning will probably get used up throughout the day. Best of luck!

Balance and moderation are the keys to success if you want to lose weight. Have a bagel! Have some sushi! Just watch your calorie intake and drink lots of water and you'll be great.

Personally I find when I cut carbs all I do is crave sugar. I feel and do better on a balanced diet of protein, carbs, meat. My food choices are usually whole and fresh. I never eat fake food or frozen food. I find heavily processed foods really slow me down. For example, if I ate a cheeseburger thats homemade w real ingredients I feel entirely different than if I ate one from a fast food place.

What's 'fake' food? I don't eat plastic toys that look like food either.

You can eat bagels, sushi, Caesar salad, truffles and a roll and still lose. Especially if you portion to half a bagel.

It seems to me you have found a happy diet and an endorphin filled activity. What's not to love?

All the foods OP listed have macro and micronutrients.
