Need to Rant (gym etiquette)

So I just got back from the gym. Short story, two guys were camped out (literally sitting on the floor with their bags all around them) hogging two squat racks eating burger king and they wouldn't let me work in with them. I got another rack after someone else got off and I finished all my sets before they even finished eating.

Has anything like this happened to anyone else? I told some of the staff as I was leaving but I'm kind of mad I didn't confront them myself.

Kind of, I really hate it when I am in my CrossFit classes and people wont move for the class. They just act like we are not there and keep using the equipment. Luckly I have some bad *kitten* coaches and tell them to move. Shouldn't there be a 'no eating' policy in gyms anyways?

Our gym has a no food, and "water only" in work out areas rule. There are also tables up near the front where you can sit and have a juice-bar drink or snack, though. I guess not all gyms have that kind of space.
Still... who wants to eat where other people sweat? BLECH!

I eat my breakfast sitting on the end of one of the treadmills all the time. If they are needed, I move, but otherwise it's no big deal.

I totally do not understand why people feel the need to eat in a gym where other sweaty individuals are working out. Gross. Eat in a kitchen, dining area, snack/break room, restaurant, or in your car if you must. But no. That's gross.

No food rule in most gyms I've ever gone to (UK). Incidentally there is a "no bags" rule at my current club too. There are plenty of lockers.

This weirds me out. I have never ever in my life been in a gym which would allow food in the gym environment. Is it a super cheap gym, or one attached to a college? Because wow.

I eat sliced apples during my workouts sometimes. It's not like people are sweating on the food.

Me either ...I find it quite an inappropriate idea too if I'm honest

I am not trying to be difficult, but I am not sure why your class should take priority for gym floor kit over individuals who have also paid their dues - unless it is well signposted that parts of the gym floor effectively become a studio at certain times.

Gah! I had a guy on the latpull machine at my gym eating and texting. He would do one or two reps every few minutes and then just go back to eating and texting. So frustrating. I had finished the rest of my training plan just waiting for it to become free and then still waited nearly 15 minutes when I got lucky and the other machine became available.
I go to a 24 hour gym and see some seriously amusing stuff. But that was plain annoying.

That would absolutely enrage me as a gym user who pays my dues you can wait ..unless there is a discount for not being allowed to use standard equipment cos of some stupid *kitten* cross fit class ..

Agreed!! I'd be wanting a bloody well sign posted warning, upfront disclosure before joining AND a discount before I was ok with having to stop using my equipment for a crossfit class.

This is bull $*^t. I would of confronted them or spoken to gym staff. Im surprised you kept your cool.

There are places to eat, talk, text and socialise and none of them involve stopping other people who legitimately want to train... frustrates the hell out of me.

This is par for course at my old gym. Their classes take priority. They used to do a boot camp class that used numerous treadmills and gym equipment.

Did you ask to work in? Because this is BS.

I have nothing but contempt for clowns wasting time on equipment and would say, "Hey, I need to work in here" instead of politely asking. If he refuses, which I've never seen happen, I'd go to the front desk and they'd kick him off.

I'm mostly shocked that they were eating in the gym. I've never belonged to a gym where eating was acceptable unless it was in a lounge type area.

You didn't need to confront them, you just needed to say excuse me whilst I get through to the rack lads. Cheers.

I'd be going mental, go eat your burger king in burger king! Even worse than the people eating subway in mcdonalds

Eating in a gym is just weird. At my gym I have the problem of people using the dip bars to hang coats on or leave their phones on the steps. I don't bother asking them, I just move their stuff for them. Usually someone handling their precious stuff makes them uncomfortable, which is exactly what I'm aiming for.

People taking the classes pay dues as well. In any gym I know, there is always programming that affects different areas. There are classes in the pool and in the basketball gym. We use the weight training areas a couple of times a week for classes as well. At least when there is a class, there is a schedule and you know what to expect--as opposed to a gaggle of bros walking in and lounging around for 45 min while they text and stare at themselves in the mirrors.

I don't know about this...class times usually are published in advance, and its certainly not unusual to reserve part of a facility for a class at a particular time. It annoys me personally that the entire pool is closed for 2 hours a day to accommodate the aqua aerobics classes (mainly just cuz I tend to want to swim at just those times), but hey, those people paid to use the pool too.

People sitting around eating on the equipment, however, and refusing to share is whole different thing tho. I can see myself inserting my body into that space and doing whatever right on top of them.

Hmm, good point. Most of the classes I've seen have been in enclosed areas, though. I think with that setup and an instructor either at the front of the class or moving around talking to the participants, it's fairly clear that the room is busy and items are being used. Each participant also grabs everything they need at the start of class and sets it next to them, so it wouldn't be a weight sitting on a rack where you'd risk getting yelled at by the instructor for touching it

I thought people did Crossfit at the Crossfit gym and that it was all classes. I didn't realize that you could just go there to work out on your own.

I think they're talking about running a crossfit class in a standard gym rather than a crossfit gym (isnt that called a box :))
