Labral tear

Hi all! After many months of pain and difficulty walking, the docs have ruled out a back injury. I meet w a orthopedic hip doc on tues. after speaking w several people who have had hip surgeries, I'm pretty convinced I have a labral tear. Will know more after appt. I was curious if anyone has had that surgery and if so what was your experience w it. Anything you wish you knew ahead of time?

Hello Mersie1, I had the op last October (29th Oct 15). I had a labral tear in my right hip after a little accident at home when I have fallen of the sofa squarely on my right knee and the force travelled upwards to my hip joint splitting my labrum. It took about 18 months of pain and many trips to GPs who said there is nothing wrong with me. In the end I went private and the specialist knew straight away what has happened and what needs to be done. I had a hip arthroscopy to repair the labrum and little hip bone shaving. It was all done by keyhole surgery. The operation itself takes about 2-2.5 hours but the recovery is a bit lengthy - well it was in my case. I was not able to put any weight on my right foot at all for at least 4 weeks to make sure that the anchor stitches and repair heals a bit. I was using two crutches and was heavily reliant on others to make sure I am fully looked after as I was not able to sit for any length of time and off course standing and doing everyday activities at home were really problematic with hands full of crutches. I had loads of physio sessions which helped to get the mobility back and I was back at work part time just before Xmas and full time from January. I have to say that all the bother was really worth it. I could not live with the pain I was in before the operation. I still have little niggles and uncomfortable feeling when sitting for long time but I am fully on track to recovery. I started walking a lot and doing yoga but do not dare doing any running yet. Please ask me anything you want and I will tell you as honestly as I can.

I had it. I'm sure it differs depending on where the tear is and how large it is. I had basically a flap of cartilage that would get caught in the joint, causing a crazy bad sharp pain that stopped me from supporting any weight on that leg until it worked itself back out. I suffered with it for 10 years before switching docs and finally getting diagnosed by mri with contrast.

The surgery was pretty straightforward. Arthroscopy with a couple of little incisions that required a couple of stitches and waterproof bandaids. On my feet the same day. About 9 weeks of downtime. I still get a little stiff now and then (it left me with some arthritis) but after getting the surgery in '09, I'm like 95% better. I don't run, but I can stand and walk for days (hyperbole) where I wasn't able to before. I can also squat and rise with zero pain.

Some things just can't be dealt with by taking nsaids and exercising. Definitely follow the physical therapist's advice whether you wind up having surgery or not.

I had a labral tear in my right hip. My orthopedist recommended trying a steroid injection first, as sometimes surgery can be avoided. I had one injection, and was pain free within a week. That was over 19 months ago, and my hip is perfectly fine. I have no limitations whatsoever, whereas before the injection I had a ton of pain. I'm glad I went with the injection first. It doesn't always work, and my doctor was very clear about that with me, but it was absolutely effective.

Thank you all for the info. I'm glad you're all on the other side of it. Thankfully I'm not in a lot of pain. Only when I take a step. Also my right leg is incredible weak and can barely support me going up or down stairs. My appt Tuesday can't come soon enough. Not know what it is is so irritating!!

    Thanks again!

Yep, walking up stairs or up any incline was getting almost impossible. Or standing up from a seated position--I had to push up completely with my non-affected leg, then I would limp for the first few steps. Best of luck to you!

I just had my labral tear repaired 5 weeks ago. I began PT tomorrow. Did you get yours fixed? I had this going on for a year and a half before I was able to get it fixed.

How did u get this injury and how did u get it diagnosed? Just wondering because I suspect I also have a labral tear. Lol of course this is self diagnosed with the help of google because doctors won't listen and tell me I'm fine. My pain started with childbirth...I could barely walk for a month after with my right hip giving out on me. It slowly got better until I am now left with bearable but annoying pain and a noticeable loss of movement. Especially if I sit for longer than 20min. Was the operation with it?
