Probiotics

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone. I just started taking probiotics and am finding myself absolutely famished! I could eat everything in sight. Did anybody else find this as a side effect and most importantly, does it go away?

What condition did you start taking them for?

I had the opposite effect when I tried taking some last summer (after a bout of a stomach bug that I couldn't quite shake). I was constantly CRAZY bloated and felt like I had stuffed myself silly after eating even when eating the same or even much less than what was normal for me, and the feeling would last for HOURS. This went on for weeks until I stopped taking them (I kept thinking that the probiotics would eventually kick in and help), and then within 3-4 days I was back to normal. It had a nice appetite suppressant aspect I guess, lol, but it wasn't even close to worth the constant discomfort and inability to wear pants comfortably.

I think probiotics are kind of a crapshoot. I think the concept can be really useful and important to some people. but I think every brand is different and every person is different and different brands will work better or worse for different people and you have to find the right one for you - if you have a condition that you think you really do need them for, that is. I don't think that they're something worth taking just to take - as in, I think they can help a sick person but they're not going to make a healthy person healthier, you know?

Two days?? I wouldn't even be thinking of drawing any correlation. If you're like most people, your appetite increases/descreases for all sorts of reasons.

I take pre and pro biotics and have not had any issues with an increase in hunger. I really don't see how there would be a correlation between the two. While they contribute to digestion they really just increase the good bacteria in your gut and intestines. It would be akin to eating yogurt for the bacteria.

I started eating fermented foods for probiotics. Specifically, kefir, sauerkraut and kombucha (no, not all at the same time!) They don't make me particularly hungrier or less, though I do beleive they curbed my sugar cravings.

My mother took probiotics for years, with little impact. She recently started taking some kefir and that made a huge difference in her digestive comfort. She has been taking it for almost 6 weeks now.

Give your probiotics a bit more time to work, and do consider that different brands may suit different people. I think live cultures are better than those in pills, but either way you need to "feed" your bacteria for them to flourish, so if you aren't already, take them with food!

Thanks everyone! I have been traditionally taking kefir, but I just find it hard to fit it in my diet. :) I'll see how it goes.

I don't believe my probiotic impacted appetite at all, doesn't seem likely.

I have been taking probiotics for a month and have not notice any change in appetite with them.
