Ive recently started muay thai and jiu jitsu and I love it. Its a pretty busy schedule and doesnt leave alot of time for weight lifting. Does anyone else practice and still manage to train weights?

Also, how do you find martial arts as an overall workout?

When I was taking Taekwondo in college my instructors highly recommended working out prior to class. How many sessions do you have per week? Consider doing a full body lifting program at least 2 days per week when your not practicing martial arts. I had two classes per week so it wasn't that hard to squeeze in a work out on the days I wasn't there.

As an overall workout, I think you'll burn more calories on a Tredmil and notice better muscle gains on a heavy lifting program, however, there are lots of benefits practicing martial arts and when combined with some additional exercise you can't lose.

I try to train MMA and BJJ 3x a week -- Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday with Fridays being a sparring class I attend semi-regularly.

I try to lift on my off days: M/W/F/Sun -- i do some flexibility work every day, but do a Push-Pull-Legs-Shoulder lifting style. I find its easier to train when only one muscle group is fatigued.

BJJ 4 times a week. Depending on the specifics of the class - can be a full-body strength & cardio work-out (hard rolls for example).

Off days - I try to get in a run and/or some body-weight exercises + yoga. I aspire to start lifting again - but the schedule hasn't worked yet.
