You are writing an ebook titled "once you start you CAN stop" to help people who binge eat figure out how to eat in moderation. What would you write in it?

a link to Dr Chris Fairburn's solid work on the subject would suffice.0

I have found my self on the slippery slope heading towards BED. At that time I did not recognise the symptoms, partly because I do not fit the typical demographic of a sufferer and partly because I could not (still do not) relate to the concept that my BED was routed in a psychological need or want - that there was some emotional issue that needed to be solved before I could stop my negative behavior.
The shining light for me was Kathryn Hansen's Brain Over Binge book which approaches the problem from a different angle (i.e. not using CBT).
So, IMHO, any work which attempts to help sufferers in this area must make the distinction (and therefore suggest two pathways to cure) of those who binge for emotional reasons and those who binge because of a primal urge to compensate for lack of calories and/or food groups.0 -
Well obviously at this point if you are seeking out self help you are aware you may have a problem and acknowledgement is a first step.
I'd mention some support groups online and in person. Good books to read and resources.
With this you have to work hard to develop your habits into healthy ones, realize what messages you may have heard growing up and your psychological connection to food or is it a coping mechanism. Do a lot of inner work to match your outer work like building your self esteem. When these start to be addressed you will start to see more behavioral and lasting changes. The frequency and types of foods change then the amounts then as you learn about boundaries, parental relationships, communication of emotions to others, healthy coping skills, self image, self respect, self love you will get better and also self talk is important bc if you are very negative ( oh I'm stupid, lazy, I'll always be a fata$$, nobody loves me, I hate myself, I'm ugly, I'll never succeed etc) you have to change it to positive ( yes I can, I am worth it, I am beautiful, I am a strong person, I am capable, loving and awesome person etc.) it takes years to get there and takes time to heal from our own self inflicted traumas. And to learn to not beat ourselves up when we mess up just forgive yourself but know hey maybe I shouldn't have these trigger foods here and learn what triggers you and what does and does not work for you. Just because you binged today does not mean you have to tomarrow you have to decide how much power you let it have. And just bc you bought the food doesn't mean you have to eat it you can throw it out ( it's like going and getting a drug you don't have to use it) discover you do have willpower ( it is in there) it's very mental and it can be changed I found dbt workbook to be helpful to me for my issues.0 -
I think someone would need to know more detail to be sure. For me, whether or not I binge eat depends upon the type of foods I allow myself to eat. Although this forum is not very supportive of the idea that WHAT you eat matters at all; most times when I hear people relate stories of binge eating what they are choosing to eat is an important part of the story.0

In my Intro to such a book I would mention that this is not a one size fits all fix. The key that unlocks each person's prison is a little different. Any offered solutions would be framed as ideas to try and if one technique fails, try another.
Self awareness has to be a big part of this and the reader may be introduced to such concepts as cognitive distortion and techniques to interrupt obsessive thoughts.0 -
