Why are you in this? [rant]

This post is mostly directed at those trying to lose weight, but is generally applicable.
I've been seeing a lot of posts about diet pills, diet "protocols" or "programs" that call for regular injections of hormones, extremely low calorie diets, etc. lately.
I just have one question for you all to seriously consider: Why are you in this?
Is it just to be thinner or is it to improve the quality of your life (or both)? How are you going to maintain that weight once you get there? Do you really know how you got here and why you made such poor choices in the past? Are you willing to potentially sacrifice your health and wellbeing to be thin? (so that was 5 questions... but the point is the same)
I understand the desire to lose it fast. Lord knows I'd love to wake up tomorrow and be at my goal weight, but I also want to be healthy. I didn't get 70 lbs overweight overnight, and I suspect most MFP users did not either. I made very poor decisions about food and exercise for many years. I have finally come to terms with this fact, and am on a journey I feel I can maintain for life, slow and steady as it is. Like most of you who have succeeded in losing weight and maintaining it, it's not easy, and it never will be, but it's a road worth traveling nonetheless.
Quick fix diets are like a band aid being used to fix a hole in a leaky pipe. Sure, you might close it up temporarily, but until you find the source of the leak and fix it, it's going to always be a problem. No band-aid is going to permanently fix it.
The only way to fix what got you into this situation in the first place is to change the way you live, the way you think about what goes into your body, and how you spend your energy. All else is just a band-aid.
I hope all of you find the strength to get healthy and reach your goals in life and for your body.

I am in it to win it!!! I basically want to lose a few pounds around my waist line. That is because I am prone to heart disease and diabetes. In fact, I have two congenital heart diseases already. I have always been petite, 4'11'' so even gaining little weight shows and trust me, IT SHOWS!! I have decided I want to eat healthier too and stop feeding my body so much crap. All these stupid little diets that never work made me realized I was setting a bad example for my 13 year old daughter. I want her to be confident and not care so much about weight. However, I want her to be conscious of what she is putting into her body. I want her to learn to hydrate like we are supposed to and I want her to pick a piece of wheat bread with peanut butter over a chocolate bar. I want her to grow up healthy. I understand that I have to do it myself before I can teaching her so.0

So true!
(FYI - I have a friend who did the injections, and she was thrilled with her weight loss...until she started losing her hair. The gimmicky diets all have huge downsides, and -- as you said -- they don't teach you how to live the lifestyle.)
(And here's something I was thinking earlier today: The Hungry Girl is hungry because she's eating so much fake food (yes, I love her, but ... too many artificial sweeteners, etc.); and has anyone actually ever SEEN a "skinny cow"?!!)0 -
Thank you for saying all of these things I have been thinking! I have a desire to write a rant like this almost every time I get on MFP and read some of the posts on the forum!0

The HCG thing is really extreme to me. Seems like such a silly crazy thing to do to yourself just to get skinny.
LOL @ skinny cow comment! That is hilarious!0 -

Um. yeah, I do know how I got to where I am. The first pounds came when I started on birth control pills when I was 19--I had been a high school athlete and pageant queen. I gained that weight in just a few short months without any change to diet or exercise--I have more stretch marks from that than when I was pregnant. Then, because I wasn't an advocate for myself, I allowed doctors to concinve me that it was just a matter of finding the right one for me. Over the next couple of years, I developed a whole host of problems--swollen joints, elevated liver enzymes, debilitating fatigue. I nearly had to drop out of University. Every specialist was convinced that I had cancer or hepatitis or HIV or lupus...none would even entertain the idea that it was the birth control pills. Desperate, and a little wiser, I decided to stop them anyway. Incredibly, most of my symptoms were alleviated within a year. I never managed to lose that weight--despite working with a licensed nutritionist and trainer.
That is how my weight struggle began. I still struggle with many unexplainable aches and pains...attributed to Fibromyalgia some years ago.
Unfortunately, the rest of life set in. Financial struggles, long work hours, business travel, multiple miscarriages, and finally a kid.
I know the right foods to eat. I even know what are healthy portions...somewhere along the way I stopped caring and my ability to jusge healthy portions got distorted. I developed severe sleep apnea and that further interfered with my ability to function normally.
I am fat. That does not automatically make me lazy or slovenly. I am active, work hard, and take care of my daughter. Now that I have my sleep apnea treated, I have twice the energy of people half my size. I didn't get here because I was lazy...but I'm also not losing weight because I want to be skinny. I want to be healthy.
Failure is possible with any method.
My weight loss journey is my own.
It shouldn't matter to anyone how or why I am doing it.0 -
Everyone's not going to like me. But honestly I'm in this to lose weight and feel pretty....if I get healthier on the way...well that's the bonus. Granted I still don't really believe in all the fads, fasts, cleanses, and hormones, because I've done the fad diets in past, and they don't work. They are to easy to fall off of, they don't fit into a lifestyle, and I always gain the weight right back. :grumble:
Which is why I think a lot of people are here....been there done that right?
So I'm going to keep trucking alone with the calories & the exercise, and hope that I don't end up with "the flap" from the movie click because of loose skin, and maybe one day be able to rock a bikini.0 -

A lot of women struggle with birth control pills. My mother couldn't handle them at all, and when she hit menopause, the hormone therapies to treat menopause did a serious number on her metabolism. I am sorry you had to struggle so much with it, but I'm glad you are doing better.0 -
I'll be sure to post my success story when I reach my goal. Of course, by your definition, I am already successful since I'm nearly 8 weeks in and am maintaining nicely.Well said....What I dont understand is why they are on a fittness

That's part of my goal too0 -
I'm in this for overall health, AND to look sexy
I'm also not crazy about these crazy diets everyone tries. I simply just want to watch what I eat and exercise. I'm also a pre-diabetic and if I can do something to prevent this, its a good idea to make better choices now.0 -
I agree. I've done a lot of fad diets because I wanted results NOW.
This time was (is) different. This isn't a fad diet, heck this isn't a diet at all. It is a lifestyle change. I've learned a lot in the last almost 18 months. I've learned to read labels, what a correct serving size is... etc.
I've learned that pop, fast food and other "empty foods" aren't worth the calories, fat, sodium, etc that I will consume when I eat them. Plus, they just don't taste good.
I agree with you that there are 2 different mindsets - the "LOSE IT NOW!" and the "I want to change my life completely". To me, this journey wasn't just about weight loss.0 -
To me, this journey wasn't just about weight loss.
Me too. I really want to be able to do the things my friends can do and just feel good about myself again. It's so hard to feel sexy when you can't shop at a normal clothing store anymore.0
