I have always drank between 4-5 cups of plain black coffee a day. Since trying to loss weight I have been told that this will hinder my weight loss, is this correct or just my fitness freak sister over reacting?

Nope. It won't hinder anything. Coffee is a mild stimulant and actually has a positive (minor) effect on weight loss.
Your sister is wrong about this.

Focus on creating a small and consistent calorie deficit.
Eating well with variety and moving more for health.
    Staying consistent.

There will be weeks when you see no loss, don't get discouraged, just keep on going.

I think as your sister is very health conscious, she is probably thinkig about the amount of caffeine! This shouldnt affect your weight loss bit once you have sorted one issue (weight loss) maybe look at trying to cut caffeine for better nutrition and body health?but im not here to tell you how healthy you are :) if you are fine on tjat much coffee continue! And congratulations! 1st down is amazing keep going!

I drink 3-4 cups of coffee with creamer every day and I have lost weight without much trouble. Most of my trouble comes from too much sodium but even that doesn't prevent weight loss so much as mask it.

There is a connection between coffee and prevention of calcium absorption that makes it important for women after 40. We are the only group that will benefit to have no more than 2 or 3 cups a day. Not sure how old you are but after you hit your 40s this is important for your health.

Everything I find on the subject says that the effect in minimal and can be easily offset by adding a little milk to the coffee or taking a calcium supplement. It is not a significant problem for most people. OTOH coffee also has the benefit that people who drink it tend to have cleaner arteries.

@shadowfax_c11 My doc recommended me not to have more than 2 or 3 cups of coffee a day even with calcium supplements but gonna ask him what you said. It does make sense.

However the heart benefit doesn't work for everybody and also drinking too much unfiltered coffee it's said to increase cholesterol.

So like everything else in life unfortunately, moderation is a good thing.
