Today day is the first day of the rest of my life. I just started reading Kim Lyon's book Your Body, Your Life. In this book she encourages the reader to journal about poor habits and to establish a good habit. In this regard, I have a bad habit of eating foods concentrated with sugar. I love candy and ice cream. Furthermore, I am a vegetarian and I consume way too many carbs. In the book Lyon states " Experts say that if you can maintain a behavior for twenty-one to thirty consecutive days, it will become a habit." So now I am going to choose a new habit or two and pledge to stick to it. Okay, Plan 1 NO ICE CREAM. Plan 2 Work Out four times each week. Finally, Plan 3 Journal my meals daily. Lyon's suggests that you tell someone your intentions and stick to it no matter what.

Good start! Ice cream can be a vice of mine, too. I thought I would feel so deprived without it, but when it's not in the fridge it's rarely on my mind. Once a week, I buy a single size Skinny Cow or Edy's ice cream. Some stores carry lower sugar versions, too. This week, I forgot it was "Saturday" [i.e., my ice cream day]. It just wasn't even on my radar. That said, YOU CAN do it too!

Ice cream is another thing I can't have in sight all the time. I keep a jar in my desk at work, so that I can have a little mid day, satisfying the craving, without worry I will dig into it in the evening [which is when I have a hard time with snacking-not hunger-snacking].

I joined a gym and brought my workout clothes with me to work, along with a small snack to have an hour before. This way, I could drive straight from work to the gym, without having to run home for clothes, get distracted, etc.

I say all this to say, for me anyway, PLANNING is key. Having healthy foods in the house and visible [I have fruit and vegetables where I can see them, single serve bags of popcorn, so those are the things I first reach for]. I cook up a batch of chicken, wash salad stuff, and boil some eggs on Sundays so I have these ready during a busy week. Keep an extra set of sneakers in the car for an impromptu walk. I often log my food for the entire day so I know where I stand calorie wise. [If Im a little too low, I know I can have my beloved peanut butter on 1/2 a low carb pita pre workout, instead of something less calorie dense.]

Even with the best of intentions, I am easily sent off track, if I haven't prepared/set myself up for success.

Good luck..and keep us posted! :flowerforyou:

Thank you for the wonderful ideas and friendly support. I like the idea of planning and logging your meals early in the day. I really like the reference to impromptu walks. I love walking especially in new areas. There have been many times when I just want to park my car and take a walk along a path alongside the road. I kind of thought that I was crazy for that. Lol but I guess not. Thanks again!
