Buy a food scale
Figure out how much you eat now and pare it down to fit your calorie deficit
Don't make it a big ordeal, it isn't, it's about being aware of what you put into your body and how your body uses that fuel to operate
Read all the stickies
= weight loss0 -

OP,
We don't anything big or important without preparation, do we?
One thing I don't see being talked alot around here is preparation, paving the way for success. Jumping right in and reducing and counting calories is difficult.
If you can, don't count things yet. Start eliminating foods and habits that cause you to over eat first. Train your mind, set up productive styles first.
Before I began calorie counting:
-I stopped eating burger, sodas, fries, salty, sugary, greasy foods. They made me crave eating too much.
-Stopped going to buffets. Learned to ignore eating pleasure, replacing it with other activities.
-Pay more attention to health issues, other priorities.
-Be around health conscious people
-...
You don't crave what you can't remember or reinforce. After your taste retrained, 2 tsp of sugars is no less sugary or enjoyable than 10 tsp! You get the point.
Then you start... The process will be virtually pain free.0 -
Get yourself a food scale. Learn how to weigh all your foods and log them accurately . measure your liquids with a measuring cup. All solids on a scale.
Learn that weight loss comes down to calories. Calories in - calories out. As long as you eat at a deficit , you will lose weight.0 -
Find something sustainable. If you find that you can eat the things you love in moderation and be happy, do that. If you can't, you may want to try cutting them completely out until you get to a point that you believe you can do that. Don't go on a crazy diet that you feel like you'll just drop in a month or two.
Same goes for exercise. Find something that you at least tolerate and start with that. Don't force yourself to do any exercise that you absolutely hate because it's "good for you."
That being said, don't write off things that you don't like currently. I never thought I would like running but I'm doing my first race this summer. You may find out later that you don't mind things that you didn't think you liked, but don't force it.0 -
Consume less calories than you use. Do this consistently over a sustained period of time.0

I suggest you start by just logging everything you eat. Put your diary setting on Private so no one can see it but you so you are not tempted to omit items you don't anyone to see.
Log everything you eat for one week. If you exercise, log that too. For the first week (or for 2 or 3 days if you don't want to wait a week) don't try to change anything, this is a time to just see where you are and what you need to do to change things. Seeing how many calories you actually eat, how much junk food as compared to healthy food etc is so very eye opening.
While you are taking this time during the first week; browse the forums and look at what people are talking about; see if there are topics that interest you and read through responses. See if there are groups that are open and that you would like to join. It is always a good idea to connect with people who can encourage you and help you on a regular basis.
If you find some people in groups or on message boards who you think would be good to connect with, friend request them. If they don't respond, their loss, but a good portion of people here are happy to be supportive to anyone who needs it.0 -

Keeping carbs under 100 grams/day will be very helpful.
