My name is Christine, I'm 54yrs old. I have been educating myself on surgery vs just diet and exercise. It would be nice to hear other peoples opinion on this matter. I have been reading about the diet after the surgery and If I already have to change to have the surgery then why not just stay with the lifestyle change and not have the surgery. Im interested in your opinion. (i have 200lbs to lose)

The surgery is not a silver bullet. 20 - 30% of people who get the surgery start gaining weight after an initial "honeymoon" period. You still need to make lifestyle changes - diet and exercise - to actually keep that weight off or continue to lose weight.
It doesn't have to be one vs the other. It can be both depending on your medical situation.0 -
I agree with the poster above. Surgery isn't going to be a quick easy thing to get and keep the weight off. You would still have to put in all the hard work . you would have to make a lifestyle change. Learn portion control, moderation, possibly even getting active to be able to successfully maintain .
If you do decide to go for surgery, just know you still have to work for it. It wont be easy either way. I have nothing against people who get surgery for weight loss . but I do caution anyone considering it to make a lifestyle change upfront in order to have lasting success.0 -
Neither is an easy path. Making the decision won't be easy either. The surgery will change your physiology as well plus risks of complications. Either way it will be a long haul game for you, requiring patience and dedication. I wish you all the best. You can reach your goals, whichever you choose. I like that you have taken the time to research what you are in for. Have you had a surgical consult? Maybe check into one, and while you are waiting work on the diet. You can always cancel the surgery if you feel the diet is getting you where you want to be. Just a thought. If you are looking at following the pre/post surgical diet, please do it under medical supervision to make sure you aren't becoming malnourished.0

I appreciate the feedback. What I have been thinking is that if I already make a lifestyle change in order to have the surgery and its working then I will cancel the surgery and just keep loosing by eating healthy. I am under a doctors care and right now Im eating 1000-1200 healthy calories a day. And I spent a while in therapy to fix why I feel the need to overeat and build my self esteem. So I am confident I will be successful. Thank you

Sounds like you have it all well thought out! I can certainly respect that, as I'm sure many can. I really do wish you all the best moving forward. You'll do great!0 -
Apparently quite a lot of people start to lose weight for the surgery, realise they can do it without, and just keep going. As others have said, the surgery isn't an OR to the diet, it's an 'and'. Your head still has to be in the game and you still have to be very careful about what you eat. If you can do it without, do. The risks with the surgery are many and varied and go beyond just the medical risks of an operation.0

To me, one is infinitely more terrifying than the other...0
