Foot pain after treadmill

Hi All,

Was hoping for advice. I've recently purchased a Fit Bit which has actually kept me motivated to walk. I use it on the 'weight loss' setting on my gym's treadmill. Last night I went 30 minutes at 3.5 mph in the weight loss mode, so hill climbing and it was great, a lot of burn, lots of sweat. After that I ran for 10 minutes, flat ground. After that I used the stationary bike for 15 minutes. Before and after I did a 15 minute walk to and from home. This morning, oh the foot pain. I'm no athlete, my BMI is 'over' and I'm working on getting my weight down by 20 pounds. I am also using MyFitnessPal to track food.

Anyhow, I'm rambling. This morning I've been limping as the pain is really bad. I've had my shoes for 2 years sporadically using them at the the gym, not regularly until recently. Any suggestions, did I over do it last night?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...

    Most likely, you over-did it. That is a lot of movement when starting from nothing. Additionally, if you plan to run more often, I would pick up some new go-fasters, preferably from a running specific store that will fit you for your gait and not just size.

    Thanks...I figured as much. I have to realize that I can't lose the 20 lbs overnight, it needs to be a gradual and safe weight loss alongside better eating. To the Running Room!

    Personally, I am ok to walk on a treadmill and come away pain free but running on one hurts my legs, feet and hips to the point of limping. I don't have the issue outside. Maybe try heading outside and take the time to ease into new exercise instead of going full force and winding up hurt. And new running shoes are ALWAYS nice :) Good luck!

    Thanks everyone....given that Alberta has had practically no winter this year, a run outside in the ravine may be the ticket!

    I'm going to suggest that your footwear may be part of the problem (I'm not usually one to hop on the shoe bandwagon but your foot shouldn't hurt after walking 30 minutes) as they're 2 years old. Even with sporadic use the midsole cushioning breaks down.

    A visit to your local Running Room may just be the ticket (it was warm enough to run in shorts this morning here in Ottawa)

    I recently experienced a similar injury and the suspicion is that my injury is a stress fracture.

    The best thing to do is see a sports doctor he/she will ask you many probing questions like

    How long have you been running?
    Did you change intensity?
    What shoes do you wear?
    How often do you run or walk?


    He/she can then do a physical assessment as he/she analyzes your walking and balance on each foot. This could also be due to shoe selection I think 2 years is way too long in the same shoes but depends on how much activity and mileage they have gone through


    Bottom line it's very hard to diagnose over MFP but some suggestions include

    -Plantar fascia
    -Stress fracture

    Depending on where the pain is localized.

    For now, I would recommend taking it easy, if you can try out some weight lifting or swimming to maintain your fitness. Try not to aggravate the pain.

    OP- you have company! I am bummed this week myself as my foot/ankle is hurting and preventing me from doing my cardio. I was doing intervals on the treadmill at an incline 2-3 times a week and the elliptical another couple of times. I'm hoping it's just a strain and not a stress fracture so I can get back to work. I dont want to push it though and risk making it worse. I'm also going to get new sneakers as other posters recommended.
    I hope you feel better soon, rest up and don't get discouraged. Stay in calorie deficit and you should still lose weight, even if a little slower.

    Thanks for all the advice...it is discouraging as I've finally become motivated to get moving, walking, running etc. I will take the swimming advice and also hope it's not a stress fracture. Hobbling 4 blocks downtown for work today was a pain. And yes, definitely keeping my calorie count within my range.
