As far as beginning programming goes I agree with others to just use the same program. I think http://www.elitefts.com/education/training-women-there-is-a-difference/ is one of the few articles about training differences between genders that's worth a read.0

There are some differences between females and males lifting weights but for the purposes of someone starting out they aren't really relevant. I second some of the suggestions about finding a good beginner program - I would say look for one that is full body, three times a week and includes mostly compound lifts (squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, pull-ups, rows, hip thrusts, lunges etc.). You'll see some awesome results if you start out with a program like that. There's no need to complicate things to begin with. Start slowly and continue to add weight to the bar/reps until you begin to plateau.
I'm not sure if this program has been mentioned yet but I really loved doing Strong Curves by Bret Contreras. It's full body but very glute/lower body focused. The book has beginner, advanced and body weight workout programs.
Feel free to add me. My lifting program is highly personalised and sport specific at the moment so won't be relevant to you but I'm happy to answer general questions.0 -
I'm also interested to know what your routine is like now...
I do mostly Stronglifts, but modify it according to how I feel and what I want to work with. I got bored/tired of rows, so sometimes sub in pull-ups and back flys, but rotate in the rows occasionally. I also incorporate light front squats, good mornings, lunges with bicep curls, plie squats with tricep extentions, and glute bridges however they fit into my routine for the week.0 -

It's a little embarrassing, because like I said, although I do what my brother tells me to I don't really know the names of all the things we do or whatever. I have no idea what I'm doing and I don't really know if he does or not haha. So I might screw up the names of stuff but I'll try to figure it out. Feel free to make fun of me...
All we do for arms are bicep curls and... the thing where you're laying down and sort of pushing the weights away from your face? Haha. We usually do crunches in between. Legs we just do leg press and some squats, though squats are slow-going. I think he's wary of having me do them because I was in PT for my back not long ago (herniated disc). PT cleared me for whatever so long as my posture is good though? And then on chest/whatever day... I feel like we do different crap every week and it never seems right to me? Some days all we do is like a lat pull-down and a chest press and other days it seems like he's just walking around trying machines.
So... Writing it out makes it really feel like it's not right. So that's sort of helpful haha.
General consensus is "start an actual program ASAP" and I'm super good with that. I talked to my brother and he seemed a little weird. I think it might take some gentle convincing because he probably doesn't want to admit he doesn't have a plan or much of a clue?
But I'll keep talking to him about it. I'm sure he'll come around. Thanks for your help, everybody.

Oh, also, as far as reps or whatever we do 8-12. If I can do 12 he adds more weight. My third set he has me go as heavy as I can, even if I can only do a few.0

The program will tell you how many reps, starting strength or strong lifts have you do just 5 per set, if you get all your reps in all sets you add weight the next workout.0
