TTOM Weight Spike

Hello!

I've been working diligently to be under my calories every day, drink lots of water, and exercise 4x a week.
However, my TOM started Tuesday, and today I weighed for the first time since then, and I was actually UP 1.4 lbs! I was so upset until I remembered that I had started.

But I feel like I have read so much conflicting information; namely, that my weight should have spiked before I started and then dropped down after I started.

Does anyone have any similar experiences to this? I am trying not to be discouraged, but it's hard to see a higher number on the scale and not feel panicked!

Don't panick. For the 3 days before until the day after my scale is not my friend. Then I get a big whoosh just after it's over that basically corresponds to the weight I was loosing during that week but that was masked by the bloat.

As you can see I was on my period the last 5 days of Feb (stall/gain started 2 days before) and from the first of March to around the 4th I lost 3.8 pounds.

I go up anywhere from 2-5 lbs every month, due to bloating and water retention. And I certainly believe it, because every month I feel like I gained 2 lbs JUST in my boobs alone lol. While your right that you would assume the weight gain would be before you start and go away as you shed, that is not always the way it works. I bloat up a few days before I start and that continues until I am done, where I magically go back down on the scale. Everyone's body is different and handles the bloat in a different way, so I wouldn't look too much in to it.

On top of that, you have to consider natural fluctuations in weight happen daily regardless of hormones, and it could be related to stress or excessive sodium intake. My advise is to just keep an eye on it and make sure you steady back out. I weigh myself daily so that I can see those fluctuations, and I do agree it is frustrating to see the scale go up, but in the long run the trend is still in the right direction. Weight loss isn't always linear. :) Hope that helps!

It just really depends on your body and a number of other factors. When I was on the pill, I would bloat up about 3 days beforehand and then it would all be gone after the first day. But now that I'm no longer on the hormones and letting my body get all crazy with it's own hormones with the copper iud, I find that I can be bloated and have really swollen boobs almost until the very end of my period.

I mentioned it to my doctor and she basically told me not to weigh myself that week because its never going to be accurate.

It's normal and nothing to freak out about. While it is normal to see a weight increase due to water at both ovulation and around the onset of your period, that doesn't mean that every woman gains/loses at those exact points. I suggest tracking your weight daily for a few months so that you have an idea of what your own personal norm is.
