The inevitable weight gain.

The scale is up 0.6 pounds today and I am bummed. When I see others write about occasional gains, it is easy for me to realize they just need to be patient, and know that it doesn't mean they are doing anything wrong. But now when it happens to me, I am second guessing myself all over the place. I KNOW my eating is in control, weighed and measured, and yet I feel I must be doing something wrong. I can practically guarantee a loss next week, but man, the emotional fallout today from a mere fluctuation is very painful and disconcerting. Giving up is hardly the answer, though.

Maybe you should weigh less often or use the Trendweight.com app0

Did you eat something salty last night? Did you drink alcohol?
Millions of things can cause temporary water retention weight gain.

I weigh once a week. I don't drink alcohol. No doubt water retention is a possibility. I'll just have to suck it up and keep on going.0

I have been obsessing much less since using happy scale.
The solid line is my trendweight. The dots are my actual measured weight that day.0 -
Yes, I agree trend weight etc is the answer for you. You're not seeing the forest for the trees.0

Try to weigh every day.
And keep in mind "a pound of fat is 3500 calories".0 -

Same. Only .2 and I know exactly why, but it still hurts. Happy scales is helping me get over the fluctuations though.0 -

Water retention is a completely natural thing even without alcohol or sodium, etc...those things just exacerbate something that occurs naturally anyway...so yes, it very well could be water retention...or it could be more waste in your system at that particular moment in time as compared to that last particular moment in time.0 -
0.6 lbs is a completely normal fluctuation in body weight. Use Trendweight or HappyScale.0

Does anyone recommend an app for Android that is similar to HappyScale?0

This is why I weigh daily. Those tiny gains have happened before, I've gotten past them, giving me the confidence to brush off the next little (or more than little) gain. For me, if I weighed weekly, each data point would carry way more meaning for me.0

I use a trendweight app and it's really interesting. I gained a whopping 6lb in water weight virtually over night at TOTM, which I lost again in stages over 4 days. I knew for a fact my eating and exercising was spot on, so I knew it wasn't a "real" gain.
0.6lb is nothing!0 -

I'm right there with you. Mine has been 2 lbs. I know it is water weight/bloat as it is that time of the month. I have been doing Happy Scale for the last week. I entered all of my pervious weigh ins and see the trends. However me and that Happy Scale are not on good terms at this time. Probably not the best week to start using it the week of TOM. I'd say it's the best time. Because then you start to drop and you're like "OMG I'm making so much progress!"

Weigh everyday but do a 7 day average to smooth things out. It is very common to fluctuate up and down from water weight, food weight, etc.0

I'm surprised nobody has added this to the conversation yet: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10084670/it-is-unlikely-that-you-will-lose-weight-consistently-i-e-weight-loss-is-not-linear0

We need to develop an informed & realistic view of weight loss & fluctuations. Do you expect the weather to be perfect everyday? Do you give up if It rains on vacation one day? Do you get depressed if the weather isn't what was forecasted? Hopefully not! Weight can seem as fickle as the weather, but is more controllable in the long run. Lots of good advice above!0

I have gotten better at getting frustrated at 1-2 lb fluctuations. As others have said use happy scale to track your progress and it will help!0

Thanks to everyone for their comments and suggestions. I will survive the disappointment and move on. And I will give Happy Scale a look.0

This is exactly why I do not (nor will have) a digital scale. I have NO interest in 10ths of a pound. The human body fluctuates quite a bit throughout the day as far as water weight. I don't have the time or the interest to allow such tiny number differences on the scale affect my day.
Maintaining a healthy, steady range of weight is what is important to me.0
