Hi
I joined yesterday, i've been trying to loose weight (on another well known weight loss website) for a few months only to put 7lbs on!
I think its because I live alone and find it very easy to just go to the cupboard and eat junk (crisps, chocolate etc) i also eat rubbish because i can't be bothered to cook just for me. Every now and then I will make a pan of bolognaise, but when i finnish work sometimes i just dont have the energy to cook. Now its summer (ha ha) i keep thinking I will make a nice salad (good intentions) only to have slices of bread and butter and a pack (or 2) of crisps to follow.
just need to get my mind into the zone then i hope my body and weight will follow.

Ok, first thing to do is stop buying junk food!
I know it's a lot harder to do than it sounds but it works for me!
I don't live alone but my hubby works away quite a bit so I am at home on my own for a lot of the time and the last thing I want to do after a 10 hour shift is come home and cook for 1! I try and make sure that when he's not home there isn't anything tempting in the house but if I really can't be bothered to make anything then I make sure I have low fat/low cal snacks and always plenty of fruit and veg. I also plan ahead so when I know he's not going to be there I'll make up a couple of salad boxes for myself or I'll cook more than usual for us and freeze leftover portions so that all I've got to do is remember to take it out of the freezer before I go to work :happy:0 -
If your cheating, your cheating your self! your worth more than that .. also DON'T buy junk food then you can't it it!!0

It can be easier living alone!
You don't have to worry about having the rubbish in the house for others. Just don't have anything in the cupboards that is bad! I can't have it there or i will binge!
I try to plan what meals i can make that will be nice and low calorie, then only but the things i need.....then i spend a day making meals and freezing them....or i make something for dinner, but make twice as much so i've got something for lunch the next day!
Have things that you can snack on....i have low fat yoghurts, fruit, crispbreads and low fat cheese, or marmite....things that will fill you up more than crisps or chocolate will..
Also i think if you really want to do it you will
Good luck xx0 -
I live alone, too and there's no one to hold me accountable but me.
I got fat on pasta, butter and cheese. So, I stopped buying them and stopped eating them when I went out.
I knew it was all or nothing for me. So, a few months went by and I re-instituted cheese. I started with parmesan. Now I also buy a 2% reduced fat cheddar. I don't drink milk. Only soymilk. My greek yogurt is now non-fat and it's replaced all creams and creamy cheeses. I still VERY rarely eat pasta. I have had it MAYBE three days in the last 6 months. And one of those times I overate. So if that approach worked for me, it might help you, as well.
NEVER shop hungry. Go with a list and ONLY buy what is ON the list. Only shop once/week and just buy what you need for 7 days. Obviously some staples like spices and dried beans and whatnot are different.
Ultimately, just don't eat things that you shouldn't eat. That's all it comes down to. Track your nutrition well and, if you stick to netting what MFP tells you to, you WILL lose weight. I promise. I've lost at exactly the rate MFP says. It's not always linear! There are losses, gains and plateaus. But it always evens out on a downward trend.
Search the forums and you will find lots of great tips but I hope these get you started. Welcome!0 -
Live on your own - easier to succeed...Dont buy the junk, no brainer? Period...0

Thanks for the responses
I will stop buying the junk, and will now do a shop for the healthy foods.
I think what my problem has been is just not MOTIVATED. Now I have found friends and something else to do (like come on here) i won,t be bored and snacking (so often)
I love marmite and crackers so instead of the crisps will have a couple of those instead.
Thanks again0 -
I would actually find it easier if I was alone...
I dont buy junk food, and certainly wouldn't if I lived alone. Because I live with my partner though, I can't control what he buys and he's the one who will fill the cupboard with sweets & snacks etc. He also eats more junk food, and sometimes it's very hard to sit there eating chicken with vegetables, while he is scoffing on something like pizza :explode:
Never go food shopping when your hungry, as this means your more likely to buy snacks. Go just after dinner when your full, this helps me make better choices!!

I empathise completely. I lived alone and snacked on junk food for years. I was fortunate enough 3 years ago to afford a personal trainer and he put me on a very strict diet. It sounded so simple... no carbs, lots of healthy stuff and of course, exercise! Because I was paying him, I became invested in the plan and it worked. It was tough, very tough! I used to dream about doughnuts, honestly!! I lost the weight I wanted to and now I find that I go up and down within a range... I actually only want to loose a couple of pounds to be happy!! The lasting effect of the plan... it completely changed my eating habits and taste buds! Now when I go to the supermarket, I crave and buy and snack on fruit (blueberries and strawberries!!) crudites and humous, I love steamed veggies, brown rice etc. Don't get me wrong, I still adore doughnuts, but I find it much MUCH easier to resist.
The other comments are so right... don't buy the junk in the first place (although I still very much believe in a treat once a week... but make it a small one!) Set out an eating plan of quick and simple meals... your thinking is right - salad is the easiest, but make sure you buy the cheats version to start with - bags of mixed salad or cartons of prepared salad... you only need open and tuck in with a fork! Pannets of fruit as a desert and you don't even need the fork :-)
May I make one more suggestion... as a way of starting your new plan, hold a party! Get the girls round and have a blow out on all the junk food. Tell them what you are doing and why. Tell them you need their help to do this and at the end of the evening, throw away anything not eaten. Knowing you have your friends to turn to when it gets tough really does help.
And stay in touch on these boards... online friends who know what you are going through and have been there themselves can offer loads of tips, support and advice when you need it the most.
Good luck :-)0 -
I think it is actually easier when you are on your own as you have full control about what comes into your house!! I totally cleaned out my cupboard and fridge of everything that could tempt me when I first started........ now if I have a lapse it is on low fat yoghurt or worst case scenario nuts or peanut butter!!
Once a week I plan my week - and then go shopping to make sure I have everything I need for the salads etc..... There is a saying "shop the outside of the supermarket" - that is where the fresh foods are kept, and that is where I spend most of my time (except for canned stuff) .... I buy cans of lentils, cannellinni beans and garbanzo beans - all makes cooking in 20 minutes so much easier...
I also portion my meats and fish when I buy them into 100 / 120 g portions - so when I cook I take out the right size portion and can not be tempted to eat more than my portion....
Honestly - it is about planning and finding ways to make your health a priority - many of us here has done it - and it is not all that hard (most of the time)
Keep on reaching out, but get rid of the "treats" in your pantry!!0 -
I live alone.
And I think it's easier.
I control what goes in my cupboards, and how it gets there.
For cooking, yeah, it sucks.
I make big meals on my day off, then put them into individual size serving bags to freeze, and heat all week.
Plus, I can save it as a meal in here, then I only have to calculate the calories once!
When living alone, you never have to worry about cooking for anyone else, either.
Get what you like! But keep it healthy. [:0 -
You can do this.
Yanno you've cheated yourself out of being a healthier for too long so know its time to change the thought process you've grown accostumed to. Its time to have positive thoughts about healthier choices and exercise and negative thoughts about how unhealthy foods and practices got you to where you are now.
If you don't want to cook for yourself everyday because you are tired then take one day to prepared meals for a week. Bake you a pan of chicken breasts, fish or whatever protein you are going to eat that can last you at least for 5 days. Steam some veggies. Separate it into daily portions and freeze it. It might seem like it a tedious task but its not. It might take about 1 hour 30 minutes from start to finish.
I wish you the best in your journey.0 -
I found it loads easier when I lived alone. I planned my food for the week, didn't keep anything bad in the house, and I had no one to tempt me. Make yourself a meal plan before you shop, and stick to that.0

I think it's harder to live w/others. I have 3 others in my family. I make breakfast, lunch, and dinner for them and i don't eat any of it. I make brownies and they just sit there staring at me but as always i walk on by. I have a house full of chocolate & chips. I would love to just cook for myself then i wouldn't have to see the foods i crave.
Just stay strong and focus on your goal.0 -
If you consider junk food to be ruining your diet chances then THROW IT AWAY. If it's not in the house you wont eat it.
Cooking for yourself is a pain. Aside from cooking in advance it's not a sin to eat a light ready meal sometimes, or a shop-bought soup, or to just make a 5 minute meal like a wrap with salad and tuna/chicken (3 mins), couscous with grilled veg (10 mins) or scrambled eggs with spinach and ham (5 mins). I cook almost every meal but rarely does it take more than 15 minutes or just be smart and allocate a certain hour or two per week as cooking time. If you want to lose weight enough you will make it a priority.0
