Weight gain normal while dieting?

I started dieting about a month and a half ago. Lost 8 pounds. Weighed myself today and I had gained back 3. I'm 5'4, started at 175, went down to 167, and am now back up to 170. I haven't changed anything in my diet or exercise routine. Is it normal for this to happen?

While losing weight, it's normal for some days to be up and some to be down. That's why many of us focus on the long term trend. It looks like you've lost five pounds in a month and a half, which is really good!0

Hormone fluctuations, foods you eat, and certain exercises can cause your body to retain water occasionally. It's perfectly normal to see a small jump on the scale like that. I've personally seen as much as 7 pounds on the scale in a day, if it's a hormonal week and I had seafood or a lot of carbs. It will come off in a day or two.0
