I quit a little over 10 years ago. For me - I had 2 things that helped:
1.) Sunflower seeds
2.) I kept repeating over and over "My health, and that of my son is more important than any addiction or momentary desire."
After the first 3 weeks, as bad as I still wanted one, I told myself that I did not just go through 3 weeks of hell for nothing. It wasn't easy - and I don't remember at what point the desire became negligible - but here I am...
Good luck!
(Oh - and BTW - I smoked my last cigarette all the way to the filter...)0 -
good luck to you i so need to do this too.0

First, you have to quit smoking, cold turkey. No weaning yourself off... it doesn't work. My brother has been quitting smoking for over 18 yrs... in other words, he still smokes. I went cold turkey, and haven't touched a cig in almost 15 yrs.
Now, about how to quit. This is going to sound stupid, but Atomic Fire Balls. You know, those REALLY hot cinnamon jawbreakers that you can get at CVS (or any drug store -- they're $0.99 per bag, or sometimes 2 bags for $1). Every time you want a cigarette, eat a fire ball instead. Since you can't chew them (without breaking a tooth), they tend to last for at least 30 mins. The cinnamon is SO strong that it burns the nicotine craving right out of the back of your throat. Just keep eating them for the 10-14 days that it takes to fully break the nicotine habit. Your teeth and tongue will be pink/red for the 10-14 day period, but you won't be smoking.
Now, here's the funny part. Everyone around you is going to smell this great cinnamon smell, and they're all going to get hooked on the fire balls. After 14 days, you'll be soooo sick of cinnamon, that you'll never touch a fire ball again. But everyone else will be wanting one. I had my entire office addicted to them.0 -
I told myself I wouldnt smoke in 2011, my last cigarette was Dec 31st at 11:30pm! it absolutely is tough...but you just have to NOT do it. your sense of smell and taste come back, and I personally was SHOCKED at how strong the smell of cigarette smoke actually is. I thought as long as I sprayed myself with some perfume and popped a piece of gum I'd be fine....WRONG. you CAN do this, absolutely! Once you start working out, it will go hand in hand, you'll realize how much easier it is to run and work out sans cigarettes. Good luck, and please let us know if you need ANY help!
When I would get the urge to smoke (for example, with my roommate who still does), i would literally talk to myself and weigh the pros (none) and cons (many) of joining her for 1. I never went out and joined her.
Also, try to stay away from alochol and other smokers until I felt strong enough....when I made it through my first drunken night without one cigarette, I was SO proud of myself! I went and got a manicure haha.
(oh, and this is cheesy but helped me, I got a pack of post its and wrote a "count-up" if you will, every morning I peeled one off (i.e. this is day 4 without a cigarette) and rewarded myself at certain goals. Make it public that you're quitting too, people are SO motivating!)0 -
Thanks everyone!! wish me luck0
