I'm a total novice. Didn't realize there is so much to consider0

thank youThere's quite a bit. I'd suggest heading to your local bike shop, preferably close to home and where you plan on riding, and talk with them. A lot of shops will let you demo the bike on the trails instead of tooling around the parking lot.
My first was a hard tail and climbed like a mountain goat. I have a full suspension now, with a good bit of travel, and wouldn't go back. BUT, I end up doing a bit more hike-a-bike than I prefer.

I am also a Novice, but do mostly street riding and some novice trail riding, I bought a mid line Giant - after speaking with someone at a local bike shop and explaining my needs it was their suggestion. Its a good beginner bike, nice and light, with disc brakes, I think I paid about 700 Canadian. I am absolutely in love with it, I put over 400km on it last summer....which may not be much for some but a tone for me.0

^ I also bought a used Giant as a novice and I pretty much love it.0

Novice as well with a full squishy Giant. Really, all the major brands are pretty good and will be comparable in whatever price range you have.0

I know the post is 2 weeks old but let me add my 2 cents. I am an intermediate/advanced rider and I have been this for a while. My suggestion is to get properly fitted and then look around, fit is critical for a good ride. Also, try to ride as many demo's as possible, this will help narrow your decision down to what best fits your needs and body.0
