Broke both wrists 2 months before my wedding. Need motivation!

Hi friends!
I'm a super active girl living in Austin. I went snowboarding in Colorado 2 weeks ago with my brother and fiancé, landed on my hands and broke both wrists. I have both hands in casts for the next month :'( I've gained a little bit of weight eating crap these last few weeks, but my wedding is in 2 months and I want to be in the best shape of my life. I love working out, so this next month is going to be pretty difficult for me. Needing some serious motivation since I can only diet without exercise!!!!

That really sucks! Can you walk for exercise? I've been walking since October and it has really helped me to be more active. I'm older than you and have a desk job. I walk almost everyday at a park near my house. I would think that Austin would have lots of nice places to walk. It won't be quite the activity level you are probably used to, but it is a good way to get some exercise in and if your doctor gives you the ok it might help you mentally to at least be able to do something until you are healed. Good luck with the wedding!

Thanks, kgirlhart! I can walk, but the doctors told me to avoid any exercise for the next few weeks in order for the body to focus on the healing process. I love running, but there's the risk of tripping and falling, and I actually have fallen on my face while running before LOL. I did go for a walk yesterday, but I started sweating a little and my cast started itching. I'm supposed to keep the casts dry so I'm a little worried about doing any more than that :/

Oh my! That's so awful that you have to deal with that right before your wedding. I'm sure it's not easy but I would definitely take this as a sign to slow down. Your wedding is right around the corner and maybe you should enjoy the time you have to relax. Try really focusing on your nutrition and seeing if there's anyway you can improve that aspect of your health? I don't know if that's helpful

I'm trying to start adding in some running, but for now I mostly just walk. That's a shame that you can't really do that either. I didn't think about the sweating and the cast. I'm also in Texas and it was pretty warm here yesterday.

Oh my gosh - I'm so sorry for you! I'm a terribly accident prone person, so I get it.. the struggle is real. You only have to tighten your diet up for 2 months. You can do it! You can still do abs/core things I'm sure.

If you've already gotten your dress and it's sized - try to think about that every time you are about to over indulge... it might help your brain realize that you're not really hungry :/

I broke my hand and gained a bunch of weight a few years ago. I went from being totally active - to couch potato eating chips.

    Congrats to your upcoming nuptials!

You don't "need" to exercise to lose weight. If you can maintain a deficit-you'd lose weight.
You can do stationary steady bike if possible. You can also do body weight squats (casts will make them slightly more than body weight).
Lying down ab crunches although they might not even do anything but at least can help with sweating.
    Slow steady treadmill walk.

Focus more on duration instead of intensity because you want to heal.
Maintain a deficit and do long duration stationary biking or walks.

This is great advice. It's true that I can still lose weight just by dieting, but I really love exercising. I'm just really bummed because working out motivates me to eat healthier and it's a huge stress reliever for me. I'm just going to try to focus on my diet and long walks. Thank you!!

The good news is foods that would help your bones heal faster (those high in calcium, magnesium, protein, vitamin c) are all readily available things that fit really well into most diet plans. Also is walking indoors in air conditioning an option? In my non-professional opinion, focusing on the healing portion first is probably a good idea as opposed to building muscle.

Very true. I am taking calcium supplements as well. I had to freeze my gym membership because I realized I won't be fully using it for the next couple of months, so walking on a treadmill indoors isn't an option right now (although that's really good advice). But I'm thinking of unfreezing it as soon as the casts come off in 3 1/2 weeks in order to start doing some cardio again. i'm sad I'm losing all of my upper body strength, and especially sad about not being able to do any more pull-ups since I was getting really good at them :( But it's just a few more months and then I'll be getting right back to it! Thanks!! :)
