I always thought people over 30 were just making excuses...

until I turned 30 (I'm 32 now). I have noticed a huge difference in my ability to maintain my weight. I've always worked out a lot - I haven't really changed how much I work out from when I was in my 20's - in fact, I probably work out harder than I used to, but the weight has slowly crept up. I swear, if I have a bad eating day or I happen to miss a work-out... BAM! An extra pound or two on the scale. I'm not sure I can keep this up until I'm 60! I miss my metabolism....sigh...

This was just addressed on the Today Show this morning! They talked about portion control, inactivity, etc. I have never been a normal weight, so I wouldn't know about the slow creep! Good luck!
  • No kidding! Eat a piece of cake one day and it takes two or three days to get rid of it. I feel for ya. I'm stuck right now and haven't been able to lose anything for a while. I've sort of fallen off the wagon though, need to get back on and stick to it! We're all fighting the good fight.

Hate to break it to you but every decade gets worse! I'm sure others will pipe in and say the same thing. Knowing that your metabolism is changing can help you regulate how much you eat. Sure, it's great to up the exercise to a certain degree but that isn't always possible. I had 4 children in my thirties and we moved numerous times (including overseas) so maintaining a workout schedule was near impossible. However, I did have control over my caloric intake AND the food choices. Good luck and keep plugging away!

EXACTLY what I was gonna say! I always ate anything I wanted with exercise here and there and was very thin. Then BAM, late 30's and I'm on here...

I had slow creep but it was from obese to more obese. Now I am at a healthy weight at 44, and looking to get a six pack before the year it out. I would prefer it before the summer is out, but that will likely not happen as it is all a matter of time.

Yup. In my family it's 28. We are all thin up to 28, then WHAM, 2 stone piles on in a few months. My father, oldest sister and I all had the same. I have managed to lose mine now, but only with a LOT of hard work, whereas maintaining a size 10 (UK) used to be a doddle.

Wow. Okay I'm only 22 right now, but i guess that's kinda why I'm on here. I want to get in good habits with diet and exercise that will stick with me. Like running. My mum started running at 45 and now exercises regularly. I want to ingrain that in me now so it's an easier habit to pick up.

So what you're telling me is... it's all downhill from here, huh? Or I guess, uphill is more apropos. Sheesh. I LOVE to eat...I LOVE drinking wine and I really do love working out and running. I wish I could still do them all together and have it be a lovely marriage. O-well, might as well embrace the beginning of the end. That's why I'm here - apparently now I have to watch everything that goes into my mouth...for the next 40 years (If I'm lucky). I'm not glad to hear most of us experience it, but glad to know I'm not alone! I have some friends with freaky good metabolism and my husband at 40, can eat anything he wants to - in fact, he's like a teenager, if he doesn't eat a certain amount, he loses weight. Jerk. ; )

It does. I didnt believe it and mine didn't hit till just this year when I turned 43 but it takes a lot more work to maintain.

That is a really great philosophy. I did a lot of exercise at 22, then life got in the way when I had children. Don't underestimate how hard it is to find the time to brush your teeth let alone work out when you have a baby!

Then you turn 90 and you can't keep the weight on. Just ask my Grandmother - she's eating and shrinking into nothing.
