I have an apple shape kind of body. When I gain weigh is mainly on my face and belly. I am afraid that loosing weight will yes get me into my favorite clothes and I am happy about that. However, I want to tone my abs. I started doing turbo jam the ab (standing) work out and every one can a while leg lifts. I DISLIKE doing crunches. What do you do to tone your middle? Is it possible to tone it without really doing crunches or leg lifts?

I got rid of my belly flub by cycling and doing crap tons of cardio. I hate ab work outs too but muscle does burn fat so you have to build it up there either way you look at it.0

hate to break it to you... i am the same shape.. your body loses fat in the opposite order it stores it so if you gain in your mid-section first that is the last place you will lose.... you can do all the ab work in the world but that will still leave the flab on top. the only way to minimize your mid-section is cardio...cardio...cardio... you have to burn the fat then work on the tone0

Belly dancing really works your abs, and its all standing! www.liveleanmd.com has some really great ab exercises! But really, the best ones do involve crunch-like stuff and lifting your legs. As much as you may not like it, those are the ones that will get the job done. I also really like doing planks and plank-twists. I can really feel those working my whole core. Good luck!0

I think--and have been reading in the forums--that you need to work on burning off excess fat before completely focusing on the tummy. No doubt that crunches can get you tone, but cardio needs to shed the top layer. I'm learning that exercising AND watching the diet is really the best way to combat that pooch :-) Best of luck!0

Running really is the best way (IMO) to tone the belly area! But I also do Ab Ripper x no less then 3x a week sometimes 4 depending on my mood! I just had a baby 5 months ago and I didnt start seeing any results until I started jogging and doing the ab ripper! Good luck to you!0

believe it or not, 2 things have helped me reduce my belly (baby pooch) so far....my Wii Zumba and my strength training exercises. I call it the torso twist crossover. not sure if thats what it's called, but I hold a spaghetti sauce jar in each hand (1lb ea) and stand with feet hips width accross, arms out level with shoulders, then i count each side as 1 taking right hand over left foot, back up, and left hand over right foot and up. That's 1 rep....i do it 10x everyday. I do other strength training stuff too, but that's the one that has been most kind to the belly area:bigsmile:0

Thanks guys. I do run and power walk with ankle weights. I just wanted to make sure that I would get toned eventually in my belly. I don't wan to be skinny and have a flabby tummy....I think that's definatly not my goal. I feel encouraged that there are some of you with the same problem and that it does come off

You can tighten stomach muscles by doing "core work"-
oblique work (a halfway situp and then rotating right and left and then up to straight position, or down to floor, or both), "cat stretches", planks(holding yourself in a board position for 30 seconds as if you are going to do pushup), when driving- press your back into the back of the seat. Take up "swinging sport"-tennis, golf, lacrosse. all use obliques (sides of stomach). Then there's plain old situp type stuff: crunches, rope climbers (touch the inside of your knees with your hands from a flat on your back position), grab a weight ball or heavy book and start from your back on floor, book overhead arms out straight and bring it up/over your head to the tip of your toe and back down to flat (a long elongated situp), laying falt on back w knees bent & curled together but rotated to one side & then you sit up about 2 inches and back down...

Planks and side planks work great, and they won't 'kill' you....0
