For all you puppy owners, need advice!!!!

So my fiance and I have a puppy who is ready to be spayed. Our other dogs and my cat all got the laser surgery when we got them spayed. It is about $90 cheaper to do just the regular spay, and with our wedding so close we are very strapped for cash. I love my animals like they're my kids because, well, they are! So I just want some opinions on if anybody has done just the regular spays and how your dogs recovered from it! I know they say with the laser surgery it is less painful and heals faster, but I have also had people say since she's just a young puppy she'll heal quickly anyways, and they do give her pain meds to take at home for the pain. I will spend the extra cash if I know it is worth it for her because I don't like to see my babies hurting, but if anybody has some advice on this topic it would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!!

I've always done the regular surgery for my dogs/cats. The younger they are, the faster they'll heal, so if yours is a puppy, I wouldn't worry about doing the regular surgery! The last time I had a puppy that got spayed (most of the dogs I adopt are older) she recovered in about 3 days! Good luck!! :]0

They didn't have laser spay when my pup was little - 11 years ago. She recovered fine. Was on pain medicine for about a day. 1 dose when she left the hospital, and we gave her one dose the first night. By her second day home, she was almost herself. By the third day, she was perfectly fine. By the time the stitches dissolved, you'd have never known she'd had major abdominal surgery.0

I wouldn;t spend the extra, although i love my pets they are just that pets/animals. They will love you no matter what.0

When we had our puppy spayed we did the old fashioned way.. partly because it was 10 years ago and I think laser wasn't really a option back then. She healed fine and was running around like a puppy again couple days after the surgery. The regular surgery has been around for a long time, I'm sure it is fine.
Congrats on wedding btw

My dog had the regular surgery. I hardly noticed she was in pain at all. They did give me meds to take home, but she was so spunky, I had one or two left over.0

i have a yorkie, she was spayed when she was 6 months... i never heard of laser? so she had the regular surgery, yes i believe they kept her for one night.. i picked her up (she spunky) she was happy to see me, she fights to lay down, but she rested, of course she was on pain meds and she had to have one of those cones around her neck/to keep her from biting her stitches, and they i believe just dissolved after 2 weeks or so? shes 3 now, shes perfectly fine! lol.. and not really any scaring that i can tell..just like any other surgical proceedure.. each dog is different.. but overall they will be fine lol..i used to scratch around them for her when i knew they itched lol spoiled brat! lol jk love her!0

Regular method is perfectly fine. Three of our four dogs all got the traditional method (the fourth is a male).
They will give you pain meds. Truthfully after day one, they'll be back to normal. Puppies are resilient.
FWIW, we never had to do the e-collars (cones). Try it without first and see how it goes. Our Great Dane pup (who is nuts) even left the stitches alone.0 -
We've had a few cats & dogs spayed over the years, all by the usual method (e.g. not laser) and all recovered just fine. We've never given any pain medication at all, they didn't seem to need it. We just tried to keep them quiet for the first couple of days (good luck with that!!) and all was well.0

I've always had just regular surgery for my dog. My worry wasn't the surgery -but more the anesthesia. (I have a Boxer and Boxers are known to have heart issues when ACE is used during anesthesia.) The pain meds aren't so bad. Just make sure someone is there to look out for her for a few days afterwards, and she should be just fine.

Haha we are in the same boat..had to spay out puppy and we are saving for a house & wedding. Too funny.
Opt for the normal surgery (cheaper). Throw the cone on her, watch her run into everything, and don't worry, she'll recover just fine.
We didn't get the pain meds. She looked like she had been beaten by a broom the day of surgery, but the next day she was up and about just fine. Her scar seemed to heal really fast too!
She's a 50 pound 1 yr old lab puppy.0 -
I did the regular operation and my puppy was just fine. In fact I never gave him the pain meds because he was bouncing off the walls right away (I was afraid he'd hurt himself if he couldn't feel). He will be just fine as long as he sees a good vet.0

I would opt for the regular surgery but first check to see if there's a low cost/free clinic. You'd be surprised to find some places will offer the surgery for only $30. :glasses:0

i have 10 dogs all spayed and neutered,, no problems with any of them but i did have to put the e collar on the males because they wanted to keep licking at it.... go figure right???0

I did the regular spayed for my doggy, and she recovered in about 3 days, she just slept A Lot, and I'd wake her to go out to potty and eat and then she'd go back to sleep, she was good as new after 3 days
pups do heal faster! Good luck!

We just got our puppy spayed with a frickin' laser yesterday. She is sleeping under the chair right now. We just went and got her at the end of the day, carefully picked her up and are spoiling her right now. We also paid for some pain medication to come home with. She has a big dumb cone on, but she is a cone pro because she had her eye removed in February at two months old. We're trying to keep things calm and not let her move around too much. She's jumped up on the couch twice and given me a heart attack lol
In terms of cost, there are places in the states, online sites friends have used, that you can get your dog fixed for 80 dollars. I'm in Canada and they don't have the program here but if you are in the U.S it is available. I think it is something to do with the Humane society.0 -
Thanks everybody this eases my mind a ton!!! I'm so happy to be able to save the money (gotta buy those stamps for the invites!!!) but if I had to I would have walked the country roads and picked up pop cans! She is only 4 months old so I know she's pretty resilient and will bounce back quickly.0

I would spend ninety dollars to keep my poodle from having to go through three days of pain. Ouch!
I love her too much not to do everything in my power to keep her from having pain. 0 -
I never knew there was a laser. All of my dogs have had the regular surgery. They healed just fine and in no time at all. Once the meds wore off they were back to themselves. Might do some more sleeping then normal but otherwise it will be fine.0

No one *wants* to see their pup in pain, but pain isn't always a bad thing, not if it keeps her quiet for a few days to recover.
I worked for a vet for 5 years, and never saw a complication from a spay. There was one poor little pup who had an undiagnosed bleeding disorder, and when they did the spay found out she also had undescended testicles (pretty much a hermaphrodite puppy!) so the spay was more complicated, and she was still fine, too!0
