OK, I'm unhealthy - I can swim non stop for a mile and a half (80mins of swimming) but get me in trainers and I can't do diddlysquat...

So I'm going for a run/jog this morning to shock my body into realising being at the same weight for 4 weeks is NOT cool.

Any tips and hints??? I know i wont be able to run for more than 2mins without having a walking rest.

download c25k- it's a super running programme that will get you from running for 1 minute to 30 mins in 9 weeks. you can download ipod apps, but i don't have one of them! i just printed off the timetable.
    hope that helps.
fwiw, i never ran either, and now i'm training for a half marathon!

I agree. C25K is the way to go. They also have a free app available for the android. I just started week 9 and ran for 30 minutes non stop today. If you had told me that three months ago I would have told you you were nuts! Good luck!

Absolutely check out C25K. If you just go out and run until you can't run any more, you''ll never feel like running ever again!

Here are all my beginner's tips:

Definitely C25K is the way to go! I have the Bluefin App for my iPhone, and it not only gives me the intervals but also tells me how far I've run, how fast I've run, and how many cals I've burned off. It also allows me to keep a journal, and I can tell you that looking back over those first two weeks, I am amazed at how far I've come. The day before yesterday I did my first 20 minute run, non-stop - it was such a fantastic feeling!

Do read Berry's blog - she really knows what she is talking about! And then read mine:

This is only my first-week experience, but it might give you an idea of what to expect! Good luck with it; please let us know how you get on!

Also, being able to swim a mile and a half in 80 minutes is sooo not unhealthy! You're just talking about doing a different thing that your body's not used to. Once you get into the swing of running, your aerobic capacity from swimming will help you improve far quicker than a complete newbie to exercise.

Is the C25K app a one time charge of $2.99 or do they sneak extra charges in on you? Looks interesting.....

There's a one-time charge of 99c more if you want the GPS addition but that's it. I believe it's really good value for money!
  • Good luck with the running! I'm trying it myself... Need tips also! I don't think my bodys made for running...

There is a free c25k app, now called c25k Lite. My wife is using it and if all you need is a timer and notification of when to run and when to walk the free version is all you need. Others will have to speak to the pro version features, I don't know. Apparently music is a feature of the pro version, but my wife hates music interrupting her time outdoors, so for us the free is good enough.

My partner prefers not to have music too; however, I find it stops me fixating on waiting for the 'bleep'! This was especially true at the beginning! I do find I run much better to music than without it.

Also if you look around you can find plenty of free C25k podcasts and mp3s around..you just can't use your own music.

I lucked into a little time with a running coach and learned something that has been helping me a ton: when I get tired, I tend to put my head down and start watching the ground. This is BAD. Keep your head up and take deep breaths to get oxygen to those big leg muscles.
