So this is not a one- answer fits all type of question.
It depends on your age, weight, sex, what type of workout you're doing, etc.
Typically, you want to eat some complex carbs (brown rice, whole wheat pasta, etc.) about 1-2 hours before a workout, along with some lean protein.
After working out, within about 30-45 minutes, you should also replenish your body with some more carbs and protein.
The amount you want of each differs with a bunch of factors.

Nutrient timing matters little to most but highly tuned performance athletes.
The whole routine response as trotted out above just isn't required for your general gym goer and is honestly a waste of time and resources.
Meet your calorie and macronutritional goals throughout the day and you'll be fine.
Anything else is down to personal preference.

Whatever makes you feel the best. Trial and error. I like to work out first thing, on an empty stomach (coffee tho!) and won't eat for 3-5 hours afterwards.0

You're not a body builder I'm assuming (?) carbs before and carbs and protein after. Just eat a banana or two before and make sure you get adequate protein after.
Dont buy into all the marketing gimmick about protein shakes it's easier to get from food sources.0 -

easier? drinking a protein shake as you walk out the gym is pretty damn easy0 -
I have a homemade weight gainer shake full of oats, milk, fruit, nut butters, whey, and spinach about 1-2 hours before I workout.
Post I have 1.5 scoops of whey protein along with 50-100gs of nuts and occasionally a piece of fruit. All depends on how much food I can manage to keep down after my workout.0 -
It's not necessary at all unless you're body building. It's just a scheme from supplement companies to get your money.0

For the vast majority of people, this really isn't a concern for day to day workouts...your overall diet should do you just fine...maybe supplement with some whey if you're not hitting those targets...the only time I worry about timing is if I'm doing something pretty big...like a 1/2 century or more really.0

Thanks all for the advice! I'm not competing, just looking for an extra kick to get those abs more visible! But I'm guessing that's down to fat lose more than anything?!0
