How does coffee have protein in it?

When I put one cup of brewed coffee it comes up as 2 calories.

When I just put two cups in together because that's how many I had since the last time I updated - it came up 2 calories - 1 protien and 1 calcium???

Did you enter coffee no sugar no cream or milk? I enter coffee black and it is all 0's, then I add my sugar and milk separate.

It's a bean. Some of the protein is water soluble.

Coffee comes from a bean, and beans contain proteins.

Hehehe. Coffee beans aren't actual beans as in legumes. They are the pits of the coffee cherry. There might be some tiny amount of trace protein in there, but it's close enough to 0 to be counted as 0. My guess is whatever you were looking at probably showed the nutritional info for coffee with milk, and was listing the protein from the milk.

Coffee beans do have protein in them, according to my bag of coffee beans...

How much protein for how big of a serving? And what is the brand or origin of the coffee? Just curious.

The nutritional info I looked up showed 0.3g per 8oz cup of brewed coffee.

It was actually on this site. And I just enter brewed coffee - no milk no sugar. 1 cup comes up no protein -- 2 cups comes up with an extra calorie (5 instead of 2) and 1 protein.

So, if I enter each cup individually then my counts are less.

I'm talking 8 oz serving of Melitta Traditional blend. It doesn't have any nutrition info on the can (made in USA).

This site is probably rounding the numbers but i don't know for sure. For instance, 1 8oz serving of coffee might have 0.3g of protein, rounded down to 0 on MFP. However, 2 8oz cups would have 0.6g protein rounded up to 1. I don't know for sure just a thought as to why 1 cup would be 0 and 2 cups would be 1.

Starbucks blends old beans in with new to keep the flavor uniform. As beans get older, the little protein they have left gets less and less. Fresh beans from a local roaster will have more protein.

Also, MFP round up to whole numbers, so if the label says .3 grams or 1 cup, and you had 2, then .3+.3=.6 which rounds up to 1.

This happens with eggs, steak, and chicken breast as well. I had some leftover chicken in the fridge, and by the time I ate it, all of the protein had evaporated out of it.

Exactly why I use powdered milk. I make a glass fresh with ice and tap water....mix with my immersion blender. Voila! No lost protein.

So, I guess to be really accurate I should just post the total cups of coffee together and count them into my total protein. Which really doesn't help me because I can't seem to stay at the recommended proteins already. Carbs are never high enough, protein is too high!
