I am eating less calories than recommend but not on purpose. Im generaly not hungry. I eat health food usually home made, mostly veggy. I do physical therapy for a back injery twice a day. I walk as far as I can(with a cane) every day. I drink 8 cups of water per day. Its been 7 days and no weight loss. I'm not sure why I'm the same weight? Any ideas? I think I need to get my heart rate up but I don't have the physical ability. I'm only 31 years old. 5'6 185lbs. Muscular build. Used to be a water sports instructor before my back injery. I'm not lazy. I know nutrition but I've never had to deal with this kind of injery.

It's only been 7 days, weight loss isn't linear. If you really have been accurately logging food and exercise, you'll eventually see that decrease in the scale. You should only start to worry if it's been a couple of weeks and no progress has been made.

You are eating too much. Based on the activity you are able to do, you have to consume less if you want to lose weight.

Weight loss is mostly about calories consumed not calories burned. Some people would say it's 80% food, 20% exercise.
  • I had wondered about the 7 day thing. When I was healthy my weight fluctuated 5lbs from day to day. I guess I'm just not used to this.

Yes, I agree with the above poster, don't panic yet (or at all!).

Overall, it's your diet that is going to have the greatest impact on your weight loss, rather than exercise.

So, make sure you are eating well, but I wouldn't be cutting calories too dramatically while your body is healing from an injury. An ongoing moderate calorie deficit is what's going to get you to where you want to be.

It is probably also worth asking your physical therapist whether they can recommend any other exercise that would be suitable for you, and be guided by them.
  • Wow Maverick, obviously you did not read my post. I'm eating less than recommend. What a terrible thing to say. Not motivational at all.

I'm not a motivational speaker, just a realist. If you are not losing weight, you are eating too much.

Do you get nasty with your clock when it tells you it's 9 oclock?
  • Thanks Pebble and Michelle.

It takes more seven days. Be patient. :)
If you are injured there are other exercises instead of walking that will get your heart rate up.

I'm also managing a disability which impacts mobility, so I do not exercise other than walk short distances (sometimes with support) and everyday living. I have lost almost 60 lbs since October. I weigh and measure and record everything I eat - that has proved to be key for me in keeping my calorie level in check, and learning portion control. If you are not doing the same thing, give it a try as you may be surprised at your actual calorie intake.
  • I wish that was true Rodarose, you see my doctor and physical therapist have both told me only to walk. If you can think of another exercise that is safe for me I'd be happy to try it.
  • Thanks cross, I am logging my food. It suggests 1460 calories but I'm only eating 1200-1300. Perhaps I will see a difference in another week.

Listen to your Doc and PT on exercise. Are you weighing your food with a scale? My cups are off by 20%! My morning Oatmeal the 1/4 cup when full to the top and level is 50 grams not 40 grams as it should be.

Best wishes on a full recovery. Back pain stinks!

Are you weighing the food? If not your logging may not be accurate and you may be eating more than you think. But it has only been 7 days. If you are weighing everything and know your logging is accurate then I would just try to be patient. I'm sure not being able to exercise is frustrating, but you can lose weight without exercise. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.
  • Whoot! Lost 5lbs. Just had to wait 1 more day. Now the challenge is keeping going. I haven't tried weighing my food yet. Mostly just entering extra calories if I'm unsure. Most of my food is home made from scratch so it's hard to approximate. Not like reading the back of pre-packaged stuff. I do read packages of ingredients though. Calorie counting is like a full time job. Good luck fellow dieters!

I also have a disability which keeps me from keeping an continuous exercise plan because I can go from good and able to walk 7000-15000 steps to spending days in bed because I can't fathom walking. I have lost 40 lbs in the last year just accurate logging. So buy a scale and use it
  • Weird assuming I don't have a scale but thanks anyways.

I would suggest sitting in a chair, extending your arms, and waving them up and down. Do this for 20 minutes and I guarantee your heart rate will go up! I did this during an ankle injury. Great workout, easy on the back!

Blazing--have you tried the Recipe Builder on MFP? I find it really helpful for foods that I make at home. Then you can save it and never worry about guessing the calories again. I love it. Something to consider if you're wondering about the foods you make.

How do you know the OP is eating too much? They didn't even say how much they are taking in, until far after your post. To just make a blanket statement like that is irresponsible, if not dangerous. Everyone's caloric requirements are different, as well as their rate of burn (metabolism).

To the OP, don't worry too much about loosing weight right now. Just get your back better first. Then maybe you could do some low impact exercises, like cycling (stationary?) to get your HR up. You can even do a workout that even though your HR is lower, if you do it for a longer period, you will burn higher calories (even brisk walking would do the trick). Bottom line... just do what you can and listen to your body. You will get there!

I would use the BMR calculator to find your base, then eat a little less than that. It is generally not recommended for anyone to go below 1,200 calories. Make sure you are eating very clean, & drop/lower your carbs. Be sure to eat plenty of protein (of your choice). No cheat meals, or days. Your goal is to be 100%. While I know that's not possible all the time, it's a goal you should hold on to. Stick with it, the results will come.

It is a bit soon yes 7 days

but sure enough when you dont lose weight you indeed eat too much...despite what others say.

remember eating less than recommended or all the other numbers online are all estimations.

I had my injuries and had to work with "less" calorie intake too.

I would wait another week...weigh in the meantime all the food ( intake) on a food scale. And see what happens
no loss, cut back some more calories.

I also started out injured, and had to do it with only the food intake. After a while i could exercise and that helps. But for sure you can lose weight without exercise, because it all starts in the kitchen.

Because they're not losing weight. You don't need to know any of that other stuff. It's probably inaccurate anyway.

If you are eating less than your body needs you will lose weight. Very simple and not at all dangerous. Your body knows what it needs no matter what you think you are eating or logging on MFP.

I don't need a fake profile picture to state facts.

Just another reason I'd steer clear of your advise, as vague as it is...

Ever thought about the correlation of not eating enough and malnutrition? What kind of health complications would this cause? Not dangerous? Just loosing weight for weight loss sake is not the end goal. Eating healthy, wise and sustainable are what is really important. If this is done, the weight will come off, not just because you are starving yourself.

I have not seen you offering the OP help/advise on either nutrition or exercise, other than saying to eat less. Again, starvation just for the sake of weight loss is unwise... on many levels.

Just because you call them facts, doesn't make them so, and are you insinuating that my profile photo is fake?

My apologies to the rest of the group for this going on as long as it has. It will end here (as far as I'm concerned).

Considering it's been 7 days, I wouldn't just to this conclusion. There are a magnitude of issues that can affects ones weight in such a period of time to include sodium levels, glycogen levels, amount of food in the GI system, exercise induced water retention and more.

OP, you can't measure this in days, but rather in month increments. Test something for 4-6 weeks and then adjust.

I've been dealing with a disability from a car accident 20+ years ago, so I have a little experience here. My advice would be to listen to the PT and doctor and follow their directions - do the PT exercises - ask if you can increase the reps, weights involved or the number of times a day, if not now, then when. Also listen to your body - if it hurts don't do it and let the PT know. If it is neutral/no pain then try to do a little more - that could be to walk longer distances or to walk more often during the day. I also find that sitting in an office desk can really cause the back to act up - I"ve rigged my desk to be higher and I can stand at it - I also have an architects chair which goes up to the desk height comfortably. I alternate between standing and sitting throughout the day and it has helped a lot

As others have mentioned, 7 days isn't a lot of time, hide the scale for a couple weeks and focus on getting better first. Then get back on track for weight loss.
    Good luck
