First Day

Yesterday was my first day and I totally blew through my calories. I ended up 300 in the hole. I had no idea how many calories I was consuming even when I thought I was "being good". This is going to be tough.

It's a good idea to just eat normally for a week and log everything. It gives you a really good idea of how much you normally overeat (above maintenance) and gives you an idea of where you can make changes in your normal diet that will be sustainable for life.
You can do this. Think of yesterday in this way: if you entered a weight loss goal of 1 lb/week into MFP and you ate 300 calories "too many", you still ate 200 calories below maintenance and if every day were the same, you'd still lose a little bit this week.....just not 1 lb. So, you're already on your way.

This was your first day, you are doing great! In addition to the above: Most of us prelog our day, most days. That way we can tweak and adjust before anything is eaten. After, it's too late ;) There are lots of tips and tricks and none of us are fully educated in life yet :D Thankfully

You will do great, at least your logging your food.

It was your first day and it sounds good to me. :) Just keep on logging your food and over time you will get it down pat.

One thing I have to do is measure and weigh all my foods. I'd seriously overeat on portion sizes if I didn't.
