I was wondering if I should swap out my fat free milk with something like soy milk or almond or something like that...it would take out some calories and I could use it in my A.M. protien shake...what are everyones thoughts on switching? Thanks in Adavance!

I switched out to unsweetened almond milk - its different. I find it a little thicker so I find its ok for cereal and smoothies but wouldnt drink a glass for this I still have regular skim milk.0

I was curious so I looked it up. I have been drinking a lot of fat free milk because it's a relatively low calorie source of protein. Compare the protein content of FF milk to almond milk. I'm sticking with the FF milk!!0

I havent looked it up, but im gonna go check it out!!!0

I mix it up between 1% Fat Free Milk, or Almond Milk, sometimes the unsweetened kind, and sometimes the vanilla flavor.0

I switched to unsweetned almond milk or coconut milk...I did it because the Skim milk has a lot of carbs and sugar. So it really depends on what you are watching....0

I still use ff milk as I want the extra boost of protein. This is a personal decision, I can see someone going for a lower calorie choice.0

I like the So Delicious Unsweetened coconut milk. It's only 50 calories for one cup (less than skim milk) but is entirely fat (no sugar!); it adds a really great creaminess to my smoothies. I don't really drink it straight; it's okay, but I prefer water.0

I like almond milk but for more protein you should try soy or light soy milk. I'm currently on the Body By Vi 90 challenge and I started out using skim milk but unfortunately it did not agree w/my digestive system! I switched to soy and problem solved. Plus, soy milk has less carbs, calories & sodium than skim milk but you're still getting protein & vitamins that you need. Also, below is a link if you'd like to check out the Body By Vi 90 day challenge.

I actually prefer whole or 2% milk because they are less processed. Skim milk has more sugar because they need to add it to make up for the fat being removed. I know this goes against the "calorie" ideas on MFP, but I think it is a healthier option long term.0

I just started using the Almond Milk unsweeten with some stevia. I think the protein drink taste better. (I have been a skim milk user for most my life)0

I pretty much decided that I will still use fat free milk for my protien shake, but use soy milk with lunch or dinner, just because it is so low cal, and will probably help me feel more full with the protein than the water i always drink with my dinner instead0

While I do like almond milk, I felt like it had a lot of sugar and not a lot of protein. I personally drink skim milk because I feel like it's not empty calories. It is totally a personal preference and depends on your goals.
I can't have soy due to sensitivities.0 -
I silk soy milk, they have amazing flavors and even eggnog around the holidays.0

I use unsweetened almond milk for my protein shakes and 1/2 almond milk 1/2 fat free milk for my cold cereal. For cooking I mostly use regular milk.0

Ive been using Silk light vanilla soy milk. It only saves me 10 or so cals per cup than skim, but it's sweet enough to flavor my coffee and makes plain cereal taste great! I also like it smoothies!0

coconut milk...the kind with the regular milk not the condensed stuff in a can is also a good one. so is hemp milk.0

I actually looked and bought 8th continent soy milk...it has 9 prtien, just as much as fat free milk, with about 20 less calories than the milk, while it has 7g of sugar, Im hardly close to my allowed sugar intake, so Im thinking this is a great sub for me.
Thanks for everyones help!0 -
Nice topic. I'm currently trying to find an alternative to whole milk. A lot of people have referred me to almond milk, but I'm scared I may not like it. Especially after trying skim milk; which was too watery for me.0

I;ve just switched to light soy milk (and soya yoghurt), more for the benefits of soy than trying to avoid anything semi-skimmed milk has in it (which lets face it isnt a lot of calories)0

Unsweetened almond is what I drink. Thicker than skim, but lower calorie. :happy:0
