"Make yourself at home"

If you tell someone to make themselves at home, do you mean it? When someone says it to you, do you do it or conduct yourself as a guest?

I find it difficult to do it because I don't know if they're sincere. I try to minimize my presence, make it so you barely notice I'm there.

    I have a cousin who does that to my sisters place every year at Christmas. She puts aspirin in an oxy (legal prescription of my sis's) bottle just to mess with her every year.

    I was house sitting for my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and they said make yourself at home. I went to play his Xbox 360 to play NCAA Football '07 (that was the case sitting next to the Xbox). When I turned it on, A pornographic DVD showed up in the menu that I cannot discuss in this forum. It even grossed ME out. I don't make myself at home anywhere anymore other than my own home.

    I'm a fatass, so my first thought is always to check the cupboard when I'm told to make myself at home.

    @_John_ There is leftover macaroni and cheese in the fridge, but I don't know how old it is. Would you eat their leftovers if they didn't say "hands off"?

    nah, I'm more of threat to the grab and go packaged stuff. And nuts...I love eating other people's nuts. Especially salted cashews.

    I'll eat all of someones shelled pecans too. I used to walk around my grandmother's yard shelling and eating pecans (handful of trees).

    My favorites where one that had long nuts. You don't see those commercially often. Most are the Georgia variety that are kind of midsized and fat.

    Well you just said you'd drink all of THEIR best liquor and wine. So if all they had to offer was Old Forester and Evan Williams, you'd drink all of the Evan Williams.

    I never believe people when they say that. If I beleived them I'd make a cup of tea and get in their bed to watch telly.
