My brother who is an athlete got a sprained ankle during the sports activities in his college. He has swellings in his ankle and is also experiencing stiffness and pain in the ankle. While browsing, I noticed that physiotherapy is the best option for sprained ankle. Is it true? He is not ready to take rest for a long time. What would I do? I’m planning to seek the help of a nearby physiotherapy clinic for a better treatment. But I have no idea about this treatment. How long would it for a complete recovery? Could he able continue his sports activities soon?

I cannot give specific advice, only what worked for me. I severely sprained my ankle and the advice my Physician Assistant husband gave was: Ice it, rest it as much as possible till swelling is gone. Stabilize the ankle with wrap, etc to prevent rerolling it. Then slowly work the ankle to strengthen the muscles. It took 6 months before I could play badminton again.

A doctor visit is needed to rule out more severe injury.

I agree that this requires a doctor's visit. I had a bad sprain in August and physical therapy helped me, but every case is different. I broke the same ankle a week ago and the doctor's are recommending a lot of physical therapy after staying off of it for 12 weeks. Your brother could risk causing more injury if he doesn't see a professional.

Depending on the severity of the sprain physio may be required. It would be highly recommended to see a specialist, and to see what he/she recommends.
