welcome to my new life
I want to talk to you about a fictional hypothetical that crossed my mind after watching a Netflix movie last night.
What if I was an elderly person who was taken from this world before I was supposed to. And, the powers that be say "oops,we are so very sorry, you can go back to earth but you will have to assume the life of another person"
So I wake up, and find myself in the body of an obese 47 year old with diabetes. He has a wonderful wife and a son just starting junior high. His job is pretty cool too.
So, I count my blessings. With some discipline for a few years I can can shape myself into a reboot of my original life. With my health taken care of, I could probably go for another 35 years, maybe more.
So let's get started planning......not sure how long I can make this post so I'm going to post right away and start another post right away

Step 1 - I need to live long enough for my future hard work to pay off, so off to the doctor I go. I want to be armed with the correct prescriptions, even if this means insulin. Insulin is scarey but not as scarey as needing it and remaining in denial. I'll need a low dose aspirin, it helps prevent heart attack or stroke. My blood pressure and cholesterol is high too. Geez,I'll be a walking pharmacy, but I will be walking.0

Step 2 - lose weight. But how? I don't know anything about successfully transforming a fat me into a mini me.
Well, I'm not a dumb man, so I think I can figure out some solid advice, then seek expert advice to fill in the details.
Here goes:
- what I eat is less important than how much I eat....awkward pause......i'm not saying that my food choices aren't important, in fact I think they are very important.....but not as important as how much I eat.
- it's is going to be a long struggle, so I need to eat often to keep my metabolism up. Starvation won't get me there.here is where my food choices are important. I want nutrient rich foods with enough carbs to keep me out of ketosis but low enough to be gentle on my diabetic challenges. I had a boss that used to eat 'Chunky' sàlads, sàlads with a lot more than iceberg lettuce.0 -
Should I exercise or do it solely with diet? That is an important question. Probably one with as many answers as there are people asking.
With some thought, many weeks of thought, I decided that a walking program will improve my walking ability years before I reach my target weight. A bad meal at McDonald's might destroy my dieting efforts but it won't have that much affect on the benefits of a daily walk.
So it is settled,I am going to diet and exercise.0 -
Hi Tyler. Most of the research I have read and dialog with my trainer and nutritionist have led me to learn that fat loss is critical to focus on. 80% of fat loss is impacted by what we put in our mouths and 20% is what we do with our bodies in terms of exercise. Focus on lean proteins, followed by veggies, low glycemic fruits such as berries and stay away from the "whites" ( bread, rice, potatoes). Add healthy fats too, in moderation. Focus on your diet then start incorporating activity. Adding strength and endurance training with quick boosts of cardio like a HIIT workout will give you an awesome after burn far beyond the calories burn during the exercise session alone. Best wishes to you and taking back your health. You can and need to do this!!0

Hey, this fat person really isn't me. I may be fat on the outside but I still run around in my dreams like I was 16 years old.
I should give some thought to the possibility that I might want to do a bit more than short walks. I don't want to cause myself a repetitive strain injury. Looks like my knees and ankles are in good health. Let's keep them that way.
I did a search of my man cave (garage)...mother load!....I found a dusty old Precor Elliptical machine. They usually cost thousands. My son tells me that I bought it from an àuction a few years ago but never used it. it works. The notebook on it tells me that it allowed me to burn an incredible amount of calories. My shirt was soaked to my butt with sweat( I will drink lots of water to compensate), and....,and..,,..my knees and ankles felt much better that they do on a treadmill.0 -
Justkris69, I was reading an article this afternoon from a bodybuilding website. It echo'd many of the same things you speak of. It advocated a strength training program to burn more fat in-between workouts.
Interestingly enough, I find I can handle strength training better than cardio.
Also, I've typically average more cardio when I am strength training than when i am not strength training. A win win situatíon as far as I can tell.0 -
I'm going to have pitfalls, too. I will need to be able to deal with them so they don't derail me.
I need to get to bed at a reasonable time each and every night. Being fatigued from lack of sleep is a motivation killer.
I suffer from impaired circulation in my lower legs. When it is at its worse, there could be periods of 3-5 days where my legs wont be in a 'lets go mood' I'm told that controlling my blood sugar will improve this, but some of it is related to deep vein thrombosis. Compression stockings help but the price pisses me off. Looks like I need to get some and find some other place to save money. No more excuses.0 -
I am a creature of habit. Despite all my bad habits, I've been having a breakfast smoothy 5 days a week for the last 3 years. It is a healthy smoothy that i'!! Describe in detail in some other Post.but the point I am trying make today is I have been thinking of other foods that I might use to displace bad meals with a good one.
Whole grain rice. It might seem counter productive to discuss a starchy food like rice but even a body builder will utilize rice bowls and baked potatoes during their 'cutting up' pre competition training. If they can get ripped on these foods then I should be able to use them as part of my own weight loss strategy.
I'm thinking about making a vegetarian sushi rice creation that I can keep handy at work. I don't like the kelp wrap so I will omit it (reduces salt). That way, if my lunch becomes a chicken breast with salad, I can supplement the meal with a rice.0
