TaeBo vs P90X

So, I've only been working out for approx a week now. I have been doing a little of both work outs. The P90X workout program causes me more pain in my back as the main part of the program that I need to use is the Ab Ripper, and alot of those exercises require me using my lower back to crunch my abdominal area while laying with my back to the floor. The reason this is an issue for me is because I have had a Posterior Lumbar Fusion back in 2008 and I do tend to throw my back out from time to time. However, with the TaeBo, I do not really use my back muscles as much as I do in the P90X program.

And, I've also noticed that neither TaeBo nor P90X is in the exercise listing's. So, I guess what I'm asking is, if I were to be able to lose my goal weight within a year (and not screw my back up in the process), which program would be best? Or, is there a better program out there that would work for me to lose the desired amount of weight?

Thanks much,
Kitten

I doing P90X and I put it under Cardiovascular and when weights/ resistance bands I still use cardio but I look up Strength training, I hope this helps.
  • I recommend P90X, but you may want to speak to a doctor who's familiar with the procedure you had done. I know that P90X will strengthen your back muscles, thereby making you less prone to injury. If you're able to strengthen the muscles around an injury, they will become more efficient at moving in ways that prevent you from re-injuring yourself.

IF you decide to do P90X, keep in mind what the videos say: "Do what you can and forget the rest." Don't push yourself too hard. If you end up hurting yourself because you went too far, you're only going to make negative progress. Pain is your body's way of telling you that's far enough. Muscle aches are fine, but if you have pain during a workout or something that's more than just a sore muscle, you've gone too far and need to rest for a bit before trying again.

Again, I'd speak with a doctor who knows what the posterior lumbar fusion entails and what its limits are before doing anything that could potentially hurt you really badly.

P.S. If you're wanting to burn fat and lose weight, I would do P90 first and work your way up to P90X. P90X is more about strength and cardio than fat burning. Not to say you won't burn fat, because you definitely will; but X is a more intense program than regular P90.

P.P.S. P90X burns between 500-700 calories per workout on average.

I have been doing P90X for the past month and i just add it to the cardio. I don't know that all the exercises are exactly back friendly. I am still struggling with some of the ab ripper exercises and I've never had any back problems. But there is definitely less pain now than at the beginning! =)

I've done TaeBo, P90X, and Insanity. For the calorie burn, Insanity is best IMHO. However, just to put the proper emphasis where it belongs, no workout will make up for excessive calories. I've always known this, but it didn't hit home until I started counting calories here on MFP. You have to control the intake of calories first.

I have no problem with my calorie intake. Since I've been using MFP, I've only gone 1 day over with my calories. the rest I've kept it close to going over or decently under.

Alright, I've finally found a workout program that works perfectly for me. It's by the same company as P90X and Insanity. It's called TurboFire. I just spent the last hour (give or take a few minutes) working out with it and I burned a total of 700 or so calories when I had 100-something calories remaining for the day. *smiles* I'm glad I found one that works. Thank you all for your input.

I am a big fan of Tae Bo. I have been doing it off and on since 1998. I've gotten back strong on my Tae Bo road last year. I've done P90/Power 90 workouts. I didn't do the workouts as a program, because I'm a type of person that believes in body confusion. I've incorporated the workouts with my other workouts. I didn't do P90x and to be honest, I don't desire to do P90x or even Insanity.

I'm doing a muscle confusion program right now called Supreme 90 Day. I'm challenging myself to do this great program, because again, I'm a person that believes in body confusion. I like my body to guess what I'm going to do next and with over 100 workouts, my body guesses. But right now, ,my body is on a program and I'm incorporating Tae Bo ab workouts into the workout and Pilates. Once I complete this program, I plan to get back to body confusion, before I start a kickboxing program.

Getting back to Tae Bo and P90x. In my opinion, Tae Bo is better than P90x. Again, no I haven't done P90x, but I know that Power 90x is just an upgrade to Power 90.

I have a lower back issue. I like how Billy focuses on the body. How he explains the moves.
