Meal replacement shakes yay or nay?
I just ordered Ideal Shape and even though it's really good (cookies and cream) I don't know if I have the strength to replace 1-2 meals with it every day to help with calorie reduction. Maybe if I just did it 5 days a week?
Would like feedback on pros and cons. Thank you!

Nay. I prefer to eat real food. I don't feel "full" with shakes. I plan my meals, try to hit my protein goals, and stay within my calorie limits. And I don't have to pay extra $$ for shakes.0

I drink a protein shake for one meal 5-6 days a week. It's just in place of solid food when im busy and don't have time to cook but is no miracle weight loss trick. CICO is still vital for weight loss.0

I get them only to have on hand if i'm running late and can't make breakfast. This prevents me from stopping to get several donuts on the way to work, but I don't use them to purposely replace meals. I would not feel satisfied and end up bingeing.0

I use protein shakes to supplement because I have a hard time meeting my protein goals. I use Premier Protein, but here are some stats on the favorites (not sure if it will format well):

I like to make smoothies with protein powder. I'm using Pure Protein which has 25g protein per scoop.
Take some leafy greens like kale or spinach, a whole banana, some frozen fruit, scoop of powder, dollop greek yogurt (plain nonfat), and chia seed.
Blendy blendy blend.
I have been liking adding chia seed because it has a lot of fiber to help you feel full longer. I can go 5-6 hours before feeling hungry again.0 -
I don't really do the meal replacement shake thing, but I will do the occasional protein shake, especially on days when I'm pressed for time for cooking. I mix some whey with unsweetened soy milk and cocoa (+instant coffee if it's the morning).0

I wouldn't recommend them unless they're low in sugar. You'd be better off making your own shake using coconut water/almond milk and some low sugar fruits and veg. You'll get way more nutrition that way0

I drink a shake for breakfast every morning.. a scoop of Shakeology (I like the vanilla...the chocolate tastes nasty) and a scoop of whey Isolate in some coconut/almond milk.... 300 calories and it keeps me full for about 3-4 hours plus it is heavy enough I eat less throughout the day... Plus it helps me get my macros of protein.. trying to get almost 10 Grams per every 100 calories I eat throughout the day...0

I do a whey protein isolate shake every day normally when i am at work i do use them for before dinner on days off i use them after workouts. Love them.0

I don't like any program or product that requires me to replace actual food with some sort of drink. There are other ways to feel full and I enjoy eating actual food than drinking it.0

They only have 1 gram sugar!0

You can also mix in any fruits and veg you like if you wish to do so.0

That is probably the biggest risk - if it doesn't feel like real food, you might end up drinking that then having some real food, and the cals will add up. You might also binge. Also, why not eat real food with vitamins instead? Agreed that it might help for a quick breakfast but replacing 1 or 2 meals each day seems crazy to me. Also expensive.0 -
The Spiru Tein shakes are great. I actually lost a lot of weight when I was 13 because of them. I don't think I would do it again though now that in 26 because it didn't teach me much about food. I just gained it all back and then some through high school and college. I can basically get the same results without it now. I still love drinking the shakes now and then as a treat. They are pretty good in my opinion.0

Nope. I eat food.
While shakes are convenient they don't teach you portion control. You won't be able to drink shakes your entire life. Why not learn the right way to portion food?

If shakes are going to make you happy, then have them. You're not going to live on them forever, and you can use them as a learning tool and adjustment aid as you transition into a healthier lifestyle. I'm a green smoothie person myself, because I hate eating anything before 11:00 a.m., so I get their appeal. A scoop of vegan protein powder thrown in, and I call it good. In fact, that's what I'm having for dinner because I'm just not into chewing or heating up prepped meals today. Laziness, meet your match.
I see a lot of hatred for shakes on here, when the reality is that many of them are perfectly fine. They count as food, too. I'm so, so incredibly tired of seeing the asinine and unhelpful "oh, I prefer to eat REAL food" comments, when half the people making this argument do something others would never dream of doing and would actually look down on the "real food" crowd. You're not perfect, and neither is your plate, so come off it, please.0 -
I drink a meal replacement for evenings dinner time. Because i usually get home around by 7pm so i am too tired to make any dinner, and i like to be in bed by 8.30pm. I think it is fine, my meal replacement shake is 245 calories which is a few calories below a normal meal. I don't go for the ones under 200 calories though.
I meal prep for the week every sunday for my lunches, just not dinner because i hate eating food after 6, but that is just me and it works for me. Things may be different for other people though.0 -
I've used Garden of Life Raw Meal or Vega One meal replacement for breakfast for almost 3 years. I use them for convenience, to help me hit my protein macros, and fiber and vitamin micros.0

If it helps you out, sure. I prefer to eat my food, if I drink something it's for pleasure or a reason (yay caffeine).
The problem I've found with using shakes is that you're not learning anything about eating within your calorie means. What happens when you're ready to stop using a meal replacement? Your life, in theory, will still have the same things going on in it that prevent you from having breakfast available to have right now.
Plus that stuff is usually super expensive in the long run compared to food. If I don't have time (often) I'll eat a peanut butter sandwich Within my calories, has ok carbs, healthy fats and protein. I don't have to worry about if it's tasty or not!0 -

I drink them for breakfast when I'm running late or out of yogurt and cereal. Slim fast Cappuccino tastes pretty good and keeps me satisfied for a few hours (I'm not a big breakfast eater though.) I definitely would end up binging if I tried to have 2 a day!0

I tried doing my own smoothies, and while I did like them they did not make any big difference in weight loss, and really took a lot of time to make from scratch. It just is not sustainable for no real change in weight loss or improved health.
Everything I need comes from the foods I eat. And they are more satisfying.0 -
I use the Jay Robb Egg White Protein powder as a supplement on days when I haven't eaten enough protein, and as a meal replacement mixed with water and fruit when I've overindulged the day before, and it works will for that.0

I like them for breakfast on the go and also if I've fallen off the healthy eating wagon. They're good for breaking bad habits. Not very good for the long term though as they're just not that filling!0
