is 15,000 steps enough along with watching your calories you eat?

So I am 5'3, and want to lose about 50 lbs to be a healthy BMI. I recently got a fitbit charge HR and my average step count was about 7000. I am now increasing my steps to 15,000 daily and I am wondering if that is adequate exercise since according to my fitbit app it says I am burning 500 calories through this. I am watching what I eat by the way and working to have a caloric deficit to lose 1 lb safely a week.

Previously I went from 173 to 155 just by walking and eating less calories than I burned. I averaged 15-18k steps a day, and some days were 20k. So yes, it's definitely doable.0

Thank you for your quick replies. This gets me really motivated:) I find myself walking for an hour non stop around my kitchen in circles to meet my caloric burn. I think this must be beneficial since I used to only exercise for 40 minutes before.0

I did the same thing and I still do except I walk in my apartment in one big circle (through the dining room then into the kitchen and back into the living room). Definitely any increase in activity where you're burning calories is going to be beneficial.

0 steps per day and eating in a calorie deficit is enough; there really is no minimum level of exercise needed. Though I would certainly never suggest you shouldn't exercise - it's great for your overall health, physical and mental - but weight loss mainly happens in the kitchen.0 -

Good luck OP! I've also been losing weight with lots of walking as my main exercise - the trick is not to undereat, so you have enough energy for walking, and not to overeat, so you are still losing weight.

its all about the calorie deficit but yes 15k steps a day will help.
15k is my average steps and helps me maintain my weight - that gives me a TDEE of around 2100. If I wanted to lose I'd eat 10% deficit of that TDEE amount.0 -
As people said, it's about eating at a deficit, whether you're exercising or not. Exercising makes it easier because you get to eat more though.0

^^ This Sure you can exercise and eat more, as well as getting some other great mental/physical benefits, but you don't have to in order to lose weight.

If you get bored with walking in circles, you can always turn the tunes on and dance a few songs. I get 1700+ steps when I do that.0

I recently started to use my fitbit and managed to start losing weight again.
The simple act of having it on my wrist reminds me to get up and move more! Very helpful indeed.
Combining fitbit with mfp, you can easily achieve the goal of: eat less and move more. And boom, weight loss.0 -
Also keep in mind that the fitibit is tracking activity level as well as steps. I have days where I don't even hit 6k steps but because I was up and moving for a big chunk of the day, I earn more calories back than days when I log a 12k step hike but sit around the rest of the day.
I honestly could not do this without the fitbit.0 -

Just make sure that the calorie deficit comes out of your sedentary allowance, don't depend on the exercise calories as your deficit, and do not eat back all your exercise calories.0 -
Walking is pretty much the only exersicing I do and it works great, I also really tones up your *kitten*!!!0

Exactly! I've never hit 15,000. I walk every day for exercise and usually hit 10,000-13,000, but if I don't take my walk I usually only get about 3000 steps. I have stayed in a deficit though and am losing nicely. Exercise is really good for you, but weight loss happens in the kitchen.0
