Cycling?

What are the benifits for biking a lot? Is it a good way for weight loss?

Sure. As long as you're not eating back more calories than you burn cycling. Any exercise has multiple health benefits aside from losing weight but it can help with that.

Burns calories, non weight-bearing so easy on the joints, great cardio workout.

Plus it's FUN. Very social sport with lots of group rides and cycling clubs.

Cycling is fun, and gets you outside, which makes most people happy.

I agree with Roll Tide Tri its is a great way to meet like minded people. We ride 3 times a week as a group, and its the same with everything you do calories in calories out. Join a riding group I am sure there are some in your area, they will have many levels of riding ability for you to try.

True. Just remember kids, tight spandex is a privilege, not a right! ;)

I ride the 8 miles to my work every Wednesday and Friday. It wakes you up and burns a lot of calories

this is the easy win, commuting we all have to get to work anyway so if you can manage it riding to work is a no brainier.
I just bought a new road bike for that purpose (my old beat bit it) 16 km each way uphill in the morning and downhill at night (and i take a longer route home sometimes) 4 days a week rain or shine (or cold it was 32 F this am) , 1 day a week i need the car to go out and do work related things, if i don't then i ride the 5th day. I'm lucky enough to have showers at work though (16km uphill and i need it)

Cycling is probably my favorite way to get some really good exercise in. And it is definitely a great way to get away with eating lots of food. Dated a guy for awhile who commuted by bike and got in about 50-100 miles every weekend...he said it was mostly so he could drink beer ;)

Too many crazy drivers and perverts on the roads where I live, so I just go mountain biking on trails instead. It's more relaxing to me to be alone on the trail out in nature. (For those who are more introverted, you don't have to ride with a group. Riding solo is cool, too.) :)

Ditto. Also commute 8 miles each way to work. Mainly as a way to spend at least some of the day outdoors. But the extra calorie burn is nice too. I used to do it 5 days a week, but now only two and weight train on the other three. I actually gained weight just biking because it made me hungry.

    Love cycling! :)

When I was cycling a lot (10,000 km/year), I struggled to eat enough to keep from being underweight.

So yep, definitely beneficial for weight loss ... as long as you don't eat more than you're burning.

These days I'm cycling a bit less, so I have to eat a bit less.

I ride for fun with local cycling groups and have just started commuting by bicycle into work. Its excellent exercise, but like any other kind of workout, you still have burn more calories than you eat.

A simple bicycle computer that tracks speed and mileage is really helpful for quantifying the level of effort expended riding a bike and estimating calories burned. If you really want to be exact about it, a heart rate monitor will give you even more information.

And it is possible to be overweight and fit on a bicycle, simultaneously. Keeping up with a group ride and riding some serious miles doesn't always mean you are thin OR slow. I've been there!
