Which is safer and more effective: juice cleanse or shake diet?

Morning,
I'm looking to start a short 'cleanse' for around 5-7 days. I understand that these are a short term fix but I really think it will kick start me into a healthier lifestyle and break some of my bad habits and relationship with food.

My question is which is better? I feel as though fruit and vegetables in a juice cleanse would be more beneficial but a lot of my friends recommend a shake diet. If anyone has any experiences with either of these I would love it if you could share them :)

Prune juice smoothies. Seriously tho if your profile picture is accurate how much weight are you trying to lose? You certainly look within a normal weight.

Coffee enemas work just as well as cleanes do, and accomplish about the same thing. Well that and listen to the post above this one.

Fad diet much? What happened to good old fashioned-- eat less? If health really interests you go the old fashioned way. Also concur, you're at a healthy weight and definately don't need a "cleanse".

or you'll binge after 4 days and feel even worse...

Neither is particularly safe or effective, and as others have said, both will likely perpetuate your bad habits and bad relationship with food.

The safest and most effective way to lose weight is to set a reasonable calorie goal on MFP, and then keep to it. Since your profile mentions you want to be "toned" you'll also need to add some weight-bearing exercise. See a trainer at a gym who can give you a reasonable plan to meet your particular goals.

I've lost 40lbs in 4 months this way. Having tried many juice cleanses and shake diets before without seeing nearly the same results, I'm now a great believer in cultivating sensible food and movement habits.

It won't, a so called juice cleanse or shake diet are not sustainable long term, so doing a diet that is for short term only will not teach you anything you can use to improve your relationship with food. And you'll only be replacing one set of bad habits with another. If you want to do it, then do it, but don't fall into the trap of believing this will have any long term impact on you. It's more likely that you'll feel unsatisfied on these diets and end up eating back whatever you lose once you come off them.

This is the best cleanse ever and only lasts one day (not that I recommend it but it is a real cleanse ;) )

My profile picture is from 2 years ago when I was 18lbs lighter but that's not the point. Thank you for all the honest answers. I have been trying to implement a healthy diet and gym routine for months. And even with weight and metabolic training 3 times a week and a healthy diet since last October I just haven't had any luck. It's a really frustrating process and hence why now looking at last resorts and something new to try.

If you're eating a MODERATE calorie deficit and exercising, then weight should come off. If not, other issues could be:

    Lack of sleep
    Too much stress
    Hormonal issue
Blowing your consistency on the weekends

just because you have a 'healthy diet' doesn't mean you're in a calorie deficit?

Hello! The type of post I was looking for!! :) I'm juicing this week.. I started today, i'm hoping to be strong willed in having a shake for breakfast with low fat milk, a "shake" for lunch but with water and juicing for dinner! I bought the "naked" juices. However, my snacks Will be solids.
I have juiced for a week in the past and was miserable but did it for the mere fact that it would indeed give me a cleanse as I was feeling "backed-up".. It did become easier after about the 3rd day but expect to feel maybe light headed and hungry. :-/ Also, no heavy work-outs during this time!Be aware that once you start having solids again, the weight lost will more than likely creep back up ESPECIALLY if your choices are not healthy.
I like to do this because I feel that our bodies at times need a break from processing solids.
    Good luck!

Our bodies are incredibly complex, efficient machines. Do you feel you need to give your lungs a break from breathing, or your heart a break from beating? No? Then why the need to give your digestive system a break from the solid foods?

You don't need any "cleanses", because they don't do anything, except emptying your bowels temporarily.

You don't need kick starts for a lifestyle change. A healthy lifestyle is a long term project. The name sort of gives that away.

If you want to break bad habits, don't replace them with other bad habits. If your relationship with food needs work, work on that, don't do more things that continues the destructive cycle. If you feel that impatience is a problem for you, strive to build patience, don't try more "quick fixes". They don't fix anything.

Neither is better. Eat real food in appropriate amounts, every day. Listen to common sense, not hype. Don't do diets. Eat fruit and vegetables if you want to. Make smoothies if you want to. Eat food you want.

I just discovered the "like" and "awesome" buttons -- yay--when were they added? This response is extremely well said and bears repeating, IMHO.

The only people who need breaks from eating solids are people with major GI issues who are in a bad flare up of their disease, for example Crohn's. Unless this is you you can continue to eat solids

Feeling "lightheaded and hungry" is NOT a good recomendation for fad juicing. Make better choices--for life.

Neither. I drink shakes everyday and I gain weight. Your liver is the only thing that cleanses your body. If you want to make sure that's running efficiently. Supply it with proper nutrients. Not juices loaded with sugar for a week. The only weight you'll lose from that is the weight in your digestive tract, since you'll run everything out and not be replacing it with any more solids.

You've logged one day in the past 2 weeks that I could find in your diary. Doesn't look like you are weighing your food either.

You want to kickstart some healthy habits? Start logging everything you eat, ideally weighing your food with a digital scale. The cleanses, as others have mentioned, do nothing for teaching you long term healthy habits. They will help you shed short term water weight (which will probably come back after you are done 'cleansing') and allow you to spend some quality time staring at your bathroom walls.

    [/quote]

I do weigh my food and I log occasionally just to make sure I'm on track. I suffered with an ed and logged everything that entered my mouth, got terrified going to resturants and having anyone cook me a meal without knowing the exact calorie content and I did this for 350 days in a row and had the most unhealthy mindset to food in my life. Calorie counting every day does not work for me at all. Everybody is different and I'm going to abandon this thread at this point.

chewing is fun. Cleanses = potty time. I'd rather chew.

But yeah, these people are right. You don't really need either juice cleanses or shakes for health or weight loss. Drinking all my food makes me sad. The only good juice drink is a bloody mary.

Unfortunately, there was no way to know that from your post, and this is a food logging website, so it stands to reason the feedback you would get would involve calorie counting. Regardless, fasts and cleanses are a waste of time.

    Best of luck

Doesn't sound like you are going to be back to read this but... in case you are... I get that calorie counting may not be the best mindset for someone with issues with disordered eating. However, neither are cleanses. In fact, that is probably one of the worst things for someone who struggles with an ED, since it promotes the quick fix, I can be in control, binge/restrict cycle that is the hallmark of disordered thinking about food.

I urge you to work with your psychologist and a dietician to find a plan that will help you achieve your goals in a healthy, sustainable way. Good luck.

The whole point of the site is calorie counting, and keeping your calories under control is the only way to manage your weight. You don't need to obsess about every single calorie when you go out to eat or have someone cook you food but having a general idea in those cases is very helpful. If you want some real long term success I'd start by approaching you overall relationship with food in general.

If you have an ED then you should be talking to your therapist about wanting to lose weight. Cleanses or shakes are not the way to go, I think you know that, and that is why you started this thread. I hope you get the help you need. Best.
