Today I went for a 9 mile hike that took about 3.5 hrs. (Fyi, I'm a female, 178lbs & 5'3'). I used MMW for the 1st time. When I got home I saw that my iPhone steps that is synced to MFP had given me 1000+ calories burned. Yay! Then later this evening I synced MMW which adjusted my calories burned to 2,000+!! & changed status from "hike" to "rock climb". WTF!? So which is right? & how many calories should I eat back? lil help please!

Well, the MMW number is obviously crap unless you were cross country hiking some relatively gnarly trails. Assuming relatively flat, paved conditions, I'd call the net burn roughly 1000 cals minus your BMR for that 3 hours. Then eat back your usual percentage.

Well actually it was a state park dirt trail, with easy to moderate incline & declines & lots of winding & log hopping - it's built for mountain biking. & I had a 5lb pack on my back. Not sure if any of that makes a difference.
I mean, when MFP/iPhone step adds "exercise calories" they don't know how fast your moving right? My speed ranged from 1.5 to 4 mph with an avg of 3.2 mph

OK, that sounds more like "hiking, cross country" rather than garden-variety walking. Cross-country hiking is 6 METS (5 METS net). So 2000-ish minus your RMR for that 3.5 hours probably isn't out of line. Your call how much of that to eat back.
