You don't have to buy anything special to lose weight. Get a calorie goal from MFP and use the foods you already eat -- just stay within that goal.

Instead of Slim Fast, invest in a digital food scale. You can get a pretty good one for the amount you would spend on a weeks worth of Slim Fast! :) weigh solid food, measure liquids with measuring cups. This will help you be more accurate in you logging :) best of luck!

Lower your consumption of calories - Eat less of the foods you do, and get the scale @DisneyDude85 suggested (it's a great investment), and make sure your foods are meeting the calorie goals.
Depending on how much soda you used to drink, you may have already put a sizable chunk in the calories you 'eat' daily!
Edit: Using Slim Fast is a good tool, but shouldn't been a mainstay. Learning how to eat food that you can handle for life is the best plan.

Slim Fast is only going to help you if you plan on consuming Slim Fast for the rest of your life!! Better to find inexpensive and satisfying recipes, use a food scale and plan out your menus while following the MFP guidelines. Its easy and most important, you can keep it up for a lifetime.
